ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team (6-6, 1-4 Big Ten) will host a pair of ranked Big Ten Conference opponents this weekend at Phyllis Ocker Field, welcoming No. 10 Maryland (10-3, 2-1 Big Ten) on Friday (Oct. 13) at 4 p.m. and No. 15 Penn State (6-5, 1-2 Big Ten) on Sunday (Oct. 15) at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
Notes
• Eleven different Wolverine players have scored at least one goal this season, including seven different goal scorers in Michigan's win over Davidson on Sept. 8. Freshman Kelsey Reviello leads U-M with five goals over a six-game stretch, while eight Wolverines own multiple goals. Michigan has outscored its opposition 23-14 through 11 games.
• Reviello has been on a tear of late, scoring goals five of the last eight games. She had a hand in all three goals at Kent State (Sept. 17), including an assist on senior Lora Clarke's first-quarter marker. Clarke, who assisted on Reviello's goal, leads the team in points (10) with two goals and six assists so far this season. Clarke leads Michigan with a career-high seven assists.
• Newcomers have accounted for half (12-of-24) of the Wolverines' goals this season. Reviello leads U-M, while fellow freshmen Esmée de Willigen and Juliette Manzur and graduate student Isabella Palde own two apiece.
• Junior/sophomore goalkeeper Caylie McMahon has been strong in the Wolverine cage over the last several weekends. She earned 16 saves while allowing just one goal in a split road weekend at Indiana (2-0, Sept. 29) and No. 3 Northwestern (0-1, Oct. 1). McMahon posted seven stops, including a third-quarter penalty stroke, to earn her third complete-game shutout at IU and tallied a career-high nine saves against the Wildcats.
• Michigan's defense stopped 13 straight NU penalty corners before the Wildcats converted on their 14th attempt late in the fourth quarter. The Wolverines have allowed just seven goals over 62 total corners this season, a slim 11.3 percent conversion rate.
• All six Michigan losses this season have come against ranked opponents, including two -- North Carolina (Aug. 25) and Iowa (Sept. 22) -- who were ranked No. 1 at the time of the meeting.
• Maryland owns a 10-3 record this season and is 2-1 in Big Ten play after earning wins against Michigan State (3-0, Oct. 6) and American (2-1, Oct. 8) last weekend. Hope Rose lead UMD with 12 goals, while goalkeepers Alyssa Klebasko and Paige Kieft have split time in the cage; Klebasko owns a team-best 0.64 goals-against average and .865 save percentage. Michigan is 5-20 all-time against the Terrapins but 3-2 over the last five meetings since 2019. Maryland earned a 1-0 overtime decision last year in College Park, Md.
• Penn State enters the weekend with a 6-5 record on the season and is 1-2 in Big Ten play after defeating Ohio State 2-1 at home last Friday (Oct. 6). PSU has fallen to Rutgers (1-0 2OT, Sept. 15) and Maryland (4-2, Oct. 1) in conference play. Sophia Gladieux leads the Nittany Lions with 13 goals, while goalkeeper Brie Barraco owns a 1.64 goals-against average and .769 save percentage. Michigan trails 31-24 in the all-time series against Penn State, while the teams are an even 5-5 over the last 10 meetings. They split a pair of matchups last season; PSU won 2-1 in the regular-season meeting, while Michigan claimed a 2-1 decision in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals.
• Junior Abby Tamer will redshirt the 2023 season to train and compete with the USA Field Hockey Women's National Team in its bid to qualify for the 2024 Olympics. Tamer, a 2022 NFHCA All-West Region second team honoree who has accumulated 13 goals and nine assists over 39 games played and two seasons at Michigan, earned her first senior-level international cap and goal in June.
