PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team controlled large swathes of the game, leading in both shots and corners, but dropped an overtime heartbreaker, 2-1, at No. 6 Rutgers on Friday afternoon (Oct. 6) at the Scarlet Knights' Bauer Track and Field Complex.
Rutgers scored the game-winning goal at the 63:09 mark, a little more than three minutes into the overtime period, on a reverse chip from the left side of the arc that bounced through traffic in front and past junior/sophomore goalkeeper Caylie McMahon to the board.
Both teams had good chances early in the extra frame. Rutgers missed wide after threading a ball through the U-M defense in the circle, while the Wolverines also missed wide on a corner opportunity.
Michigan scored the equalizer on its penalty at 36:46 in the third quarter. U-M drew the corner after a Rutgers reverse chip clanged off the left post and resulted in a fast break going the opposition direction. Senior Anouk Veen aimed the initial corner shot to the right post, where graduate student Isabella Palde got her stick on the turf and redirected it into the cage for her third goal of the season.
It appeared that Rutgers answered in the final minute of the third when it fired a direct penalty-corner shot off the board but had the goal waved off on an umpire referral as too high.
Rutgers scored the game's first goal on its first corner midway through the first quarter, at 7:28. McMahon earned two saves, but the Scarlet Knight finished a third attempt out of a scrum in front of the cage.
Michigan outshot the Scarlet Knights, 12-9, and outcornered them, 9-4. McMahon and Rutgers goalkeeper Sophia Howard posted three saves apiece, while RU also tallied a defensive save.
The Wolverines (6-6, 1-4 Big Ten) return home to host a pair of Big Ten Conference games next weekend at Phyllis Ocker Field. Michigan will host Maryland at 4 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 13) and Penn State at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 15). Both games will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network, and admission is free for all regular-season home games.
