ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's golf head coach Jan Dowling announced Wednesday (Nov. 8) the additions of Suzie Tran and Consuela "Mimi" Guo after they signed with the Wolverines during the early National Letter of Intent signing period.
A Poulsbo, Wash., native, Tran highlighted her 2023 summer winning the Women's Western Junior after a 1-up victory over Lisa Herman at the Hinsdale Golf Club. Earning the sixth seed after stroke play qualifying she rattled three opening match wins to advance to the title match. After tying for 11th at the Patrick Reed AJGA Junior (76-77-74/227), she qualified for the 2023 PGA Junior Championship, however, had to withdraw due to injury. Tran is ranked as the No. 4 junior in Washington and No. 3 in the Class of 2024.
She highlighted her 2022 summer by posting four top-15 finishes as she tied for eighth at Randy Wise Junior Open (75-74-72/221) and added a second top 10 after she tied for 10th at the Dustin Johnson World Junior (77-75-74/226). She also tied for 13th at Mariah Stackhouse Girls Invitational (71-74-74/219) and tied for 15th at IMG Academy Junior World (71-72-67-75/285). She earned an exemption to the Epson Tour's Circling Raven Championship, but did not compete due to illness.
"Suzie is a thoughtful and purposeful young woman," said Dowling. "For an incoming freshman, she brings an astounding level of maturity, insight and experience. Suzie is very much a self-taught competitor and uses her natural instincts, feel and exceptional work ethic to her advantage. This will be a huge asset to our team as soon as she steps on campus.
"When she is able to utilize our resources on a daily basis, I believe she will thrive and improve steadily throughout her four years at Michigan. She is also a fabulous student who is just as determined in the classroom as the golf course, and already understands how to balance a rigorous academic schedule with high performance."
With a 3-and-2 victory over Amber Li, Tran won the 2021 WJGA State Match Play Championship and followed with a third-place overall finish (71-73-75/219) at the WJGA State Championship. After winning her Seattle regional (76-69/145), she used a 10-under 206 (71-70-65) tally to win the Notah Begay III Junior National.
Throughout the summer of 2021, she would add medalist honors at the AJGA Junior All-Star at Stanford (68-66-69/203, -10), a runner-up finish at the AJGA Junior All-Star Invitational (66-78-75/219, +3) as well as five more top-10 individual finishes.
Making her way to Ann Arbor from Auckland, New Zealand, Guo has continued to find international success as she is rated the No. 39 overall international player and No. 16 from the Class of 2024. Playing in the U.S., she highlighted her 2023 summer by winning her last AJGA event at the Mizuno/Greyson Sigg Junior Championship. Claiming medalist honors with a 69 (-3), she used a six-under 210 (69-70-71) total to capture the individual title.
Earlier that summer, she posted a fifth-place finish at the Coca-Cola Junior Championship (70-75-73/218), 18th-place finish at the AJGA Panama Junior (78-75-76/229) and tied for 51st at the Hilton Grand Vacations ANNIKA Invitational (73-76-76/225). Additionally, she was selected to play for New Zealand at the Women's Amateur Asia Pacific in Singapore and was third at the North Shore Classic (77-71-74/222).
"Mimi brings incredible energy and a level of determination that is to be admired," commented Dowling. "She has faced some adversity in her life, and has made the most of her opportunities and willingness to fight for her success. These are hard attributes to instill, so I'm incredibly excited to bring in such a determined young athlete. She also understands and respects the value of a great education and brings a wealth of international golf experience that will help us right away."
In 2022, Guo won her USGA qualifier (70, -2) and competed at the U.S. Girls' Junior at the Club at Olde Stone, however, missed the cut for match play. She added a second qualifier (70, -2) victory and used that momentum to post an individual win at the Future Legends Junior Championship with a two-under 214 total. She claimed a second medalist honor after winning the North Shore Classic (67-77-70/214) as well as a pair of runner-up finishes at the Three Little Birds Memorial (73-70-71/214, -2) and the Coca-Cola Junior Championship (69-70-70/209, -7).
Dowling and Michigan will lose four Wolverines next season as Hailey Borja, Mikaela Schulz, Emilie Paltrinieri and Monet Chuni's eligibility will be exhausted.
