Jackson's Career Day Lifts U-M to Late Win Over Hofstra

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday (Feb. 18) courtesy of late fourth-quarter goal from senior midfielder Jacob Jackson to defeat Hofstra 11-10 at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
Michigan (1-1) opened up its 2023 home schedule with an electric matchup that featured seven ties and five lead changes. Jackson led the Wolverines in scoring with four goals and one assist for a career-high five points. Freshman goaltender Hunter Taylor picked up his first win as a Wolverine, making his debut between the pipes with 9:55 left in the second quarter. He played the remainder of the game and made 10 saves while allowing five goals.
The Wolverines opened up the scoring 11 seconds in when sophomore attackman Ryan Cohen put one past the Hofstra goalkeeper. The goal was the fastest to start a game in program history. Hofstra (0-3) responded with three straight goals over the next 10 minutes, making it a 3-1 Michigan deficit with 6:24 remaining in the first quarter.
U-M closed out the opening frame with a three-goal run of its own. Junior attackman Michael Boehm assisted Jacob Jackson and Ryan Cohen on two of the goals to even the score at 3. Graduate midfielder Peter Thompson scored an unassisted marker to give Michigan a 4-3 lead with 54 seconds remaining in the first period of play.
Hofstra found its first tally of the second quarter less than a minute into play, taking advantage of the extra-man opportunity to tie the game at 4 with 14:01 remaining in the first half. Boehm notched his fourth assist of the afternoon after finding graduate attackmen Bryce Clay and Jackson less than two minutes apart to make it a 6-4 Wolverine lead.
U-M and Hofstra then traded a pair of goals, as senior attackman Josh Zawada responded four seconds after the Hofstra score with an unassisted goal of his own to make it a 7-5 advantage for Michigan with 9:53 remaining in the quarter. The Pride notched two goals to close out the half, tying the the game at 7 heading into halftime.
Jackson opened up the second half with his third goal of the game, giving Michigan an 8-7 edge less than a minute into the half. However, his marker was the only Wolverine tally of the frame, as Hofstra recorded two more goals over the next 14 minutes to take a 9-8 lead heading into the final quarter.
Josh Zawada tied the game off an assist from Jackson with 14:29 remaining in regulation, bringing the score even at 9. A score from sophomore midfielder Aidan Mulholland briefly gave Michigan another one-point edge, 10-9, with 6:46 remaining in the game before a goal from the Pride again evened the score at 10 with 4:02 remaining.
With under one minute left to play and overtime looming, Zawada found an open Jackson, who sent one flying into the net to record his fourth goal of the afternoon. Jackon's tally made gave U-M an 11-10 lead with 51 seconds remaining in regulation. Michigan won the ensuing draw and ran out the clock to secure its first win of the season.
Boehm totaled four assists on the afternoon, matching a career best, with all of them coming in the first half. Michigan went 5-of-5 at the faceoff dot in the fourth quarter and 16-of-23 on the afternoon. Graduate student Nick Rowlett led the category with a 17-of-23 mark to go along with seven ground balls. U-M won the ground ball category by 29-20.
Defensively, sophomore Kees Van Wees had a trio of ground ball pickups and caused turnovers, while junior Jack Whitney caused a pair of turnovers. Graduate student Andrew Darby also made his season debut with a start on close defense, registering a ground ball.
Zawada's pair of goals brings his career total to 97, three shy of the 100-goal plateau, and five away from the school record of 102 (Brent Noseworthy). Meanwhile, with Michigan's victory, head coach Kevin Conry improved his record to 5-1 in home openers.
