Wolverines Stumble Late, Fall to No. 5 Nittany Lions

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan men's lacrosse team fell 11-9 to No. 5 Penn State in front of a crowd of 2,387 on Sunday (April 16) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
Michigan (5-6, 1-3 Big Ten) got out to 2-0 lead in the opening quarter. Junior Jacob Jackson scored his 15th goal of the season at the 12:38 mark, and a goal from graduate student Bryce Clay added to the lead at the 12:18 mark. Sophomore Ryan Cohen scored at the with 6:34 on the clock in the first quarter to bring the score to 3-1. The opening period ended 4-2 in favor of the Wolverines after senior Jake Bonomi scored in the final seconds.
In the second quarter, senior Josh Zawada scored at the 9:30 mark, and Clay scored his second goal of the game at the 4:13 mark, helping Michigan to a 6-4 lead at the half.
Michigan opened the second half with two unanswered goals early in the third quarter as Cohen scored his second goal of the game at the 11:44 mark. At the 9:49 mark of the third quarter, Clay slotted home his third goal of the contest, while Zawada scored his second of the game with 15 seconds left in the third, sending the Wolverines into the fourth quarter with a 9-6 lead.
Penn State (8-3, 3-1 Big Ten) took its first lead of the game at the 5:57 mark of the fourth quarter. The Nittany Lions scored five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter with four goals coming from Jack Traynor, who scored a game-high six. PSU goaltender Jack Fracyon made 17 saves throughout the course of the game. Penn State also capitalized on Michigan's struggle with penalties, going 3-for-5 on extra-man opportunities.
Michigan's offense was led by Clay, who had three goals and one assist, while Zawada recorded two goals and two assists. Graduate-student defender Andrew Darby held PSU's top scorer TJ Malone to only two points, while the faceoff tandem of graduate student Nick Rowlett (10-of-16) and junior Justin Wietfeldt (4-of-8) won the faceoff battle.

The Wolverines wrap up the regular season against No. 18 Ohio State on Friday (April 21) at 8 p.m. U-M will honor 15 seniors prior to the contest that will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
