PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team fell 13-12 in overtime to the No. 12 Rutgers on Friday (April 7) at SHI Stadium.
Michigan (5-5, 1-2 Big Ten) was held scoreless for more than 20 minutes and trailed by as many as five goals, and three in the fourth quarter, but closed regulation time on a 3-0 run to send the contest into overtime. Rutgers' Shane Knobloch scored the game-winner 38 seconds into the extra session.
U-M fell behind 2-0 early on but answered with two straight markers from junior Michael Boehm and senior Jake Bonomi to tie the contest at 2 at the 6:20 mark of the opening quarter.
Rutgers (8-3, 1-2 Big Ten) took a 3-2 lead at the 3:23 portion of the first on a marker from Jack Aimone. However, the Wolverines answered with back-to-back scores at 11:42 from graduate student Bryce Clay and Boehm's second at 9:54 gave U-M a 4-3 lead.
The Scarlet Knights then went on a 6-0 run, spanning the middle portion of the second and third quarters, holding U-M scoreless for 20-plus minutes. Sophomores Ryan Cohen and Aidan Mulholland then marked scores 1:15 apart to end the scoreless drought. U-M then tacked on two more in the final minute of the third, with Boehm marking his third of the night and senior Jacob Jackson beating the clock with three seconds left to make it a one-goal game at 9-8 heading into the fourth.
Following a Scarlet Knights tally, Jackson converted off a feed from Mulholland at 13:32 to bring the score to 10-9. A Rutgers goal from Justin Kim at 12:02 and Brian Cameron at 9:33 seemingly put the contest out of reach at 12-9. However, senior Kevin Pimental cashed in on an extra-man chance at 7:44, and graduate student Peter Thomson converted again on the locked-in foul for another extra-man score that brought the count to 12-11 Rutgers with 7:28 to play.
Boehm's fourth score of the night at 4:11 tied the contest at 12 and was the final marker for either side as the game went to overtime. The Wolverines won the clamp on the faceoff to start overtime but could not collect the ground ball and lost possession. Following a Scarlet Knight timeout, RU ended the contest at 3:22 with his third of the day.
Rutgers' Cameron matched Boehm's game-high four goals, with three coming in the second half. U-M junior goalie Shane Carr went the distance, making 14 saves against 13 goals allowed, while graduate-student faceoff man Nick Rowlett won 10-of-16 faceoffs with four ground balls. Boehm had four goals and an assist for his five points, while Cohen had a game-high four assists with a goal. Michigan was partially done in by 15 turnovers, with 11 caused by the Scarlet Knights.
