ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan baseball head coach Tracy Smith announced the promotion of Tyler Graham to a full-time assistant coach on Wednesday (July 26) following the NCAA Division I Council's July 1 coaching-limit increase. Graham spent last season as the Wolverines' volunteer coach.
"Excited to announce that we have promoted Tyler Graham to the position of assistant baseball coach," said Smith. "Tyler joined the staff last year as the volunteer coach, and it's rewarding for both Tyler and the Michigan baseball program that the NCAA has finally recognized the contributions and impact of the volunteer position by allowing making it a full-time position. He has worked hard to put himself in this position, and we are thrilled to be able to eliminate the 'volunteer' tag from his title."
"I am grateful to be a part of the University of Michigan baseball program and continue to build on the culture and tradition of this amazing university with this staff," said Graham. "I'm also very excited about the direction the program is headed and look forward to continuing to work with Michigan men."
Graham spent last season as the Wolverines' volunteer coach, working particularly with the hitters over the course of the season. He came to Ann Arbor after spending the prior two years as a private hitting coach. Graham also has served as an assistant coach for the Nashville Sounds. He got his start in coaching at his alma mater, Oregon State, where he served as an undergraduate assistant for two years before shifting to OSU's director of player development. While at Oregon State, Graham was part of the 2017 College World Series and 2018 National Championship teams.
He played nine seasons of professional baseball and accumulated 267 steals from Low-A to Major League Baseball, where he debuted in 2012 with the Arizona Diamondbacks. In college, he played 151 games with Oregon State and led them to a national championship in 2005 and two Pac-10 conference titles.
