ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team (0-2) will open a four-game homestand with a pair of non-conference contests this weekend at Phyllis Ocker Field. U-M will host UC Davis (0-3) for its home opener at 6 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 1) before welcoming No. 18 Old Dominion (0-1) at noon on Sunday (Sept. 3).
Notes
• Michigan owns an impressive 204-60 record at its home facility since its 1995 inauguration, including a stout 99-23 mark over the last 12 seasons. The Wolverines went 7-2 at Ocker Field last season, outscoring their opposition 35-5 with six shutouts. In home openers at Ocker Field, U-M is 19-9.
• Freshman Juliette Manzur netted her first collegiate goal in her first collegiate game -- and the Wolverines' first of the 2023 season -- in the first quarter of the season opener against No. 1 North Carolina. Fellow freshman Natalie Millman earned her first collegiate assist on the play and fed the ball inside the 25 to Manzur, who beat a defender one-on-one to score on a reverse chip.
• Four Michigan newcomers earned their first collegiate playing time over the Wolverines' opening weekend: freshmen Manzur, Millman, Abby Burnett, Esmée de Willigen, Payton Maloney and Kelsey Reviello and graduate student Isabella Palde. Burnett and Palde started both games at back and forward, respectively.
• Senior Anouk Veen also scored on a fourth-quarter penalty corner in the UNC game in her first game in nearly a year after suffering a season-ending injury just six games into 2022. Veen has been among U-M's most reliable corner strikers over her tenure and now owns 10 career goals.
• Junior/Sophomore goalkeeper Caylie McMahon registered a career-best eight saves against both UNC and Wake Forest last weekend, tallying seven saves in the second half against the Tar Heels and five in the second half against Wake. McMahon, who redshirted her first season after overcoming spinal surgery, split time early in the season last year with Anna Spieker. Her previous single-game high was four saves, which she registered in the second half against UNC in 2022.
• Of Michigan's four goals allowed over the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, two came on penalty corners and one was a penalty stroke. Michigan allowed just one goal from the field.
• UC Davis is 0-3 on the season, including a pair of losses to Big Ten opponents -- Rutgers (2-0, Aug. 25) and Maryland (6-0, Aug. 28). The Aggies also fell to Miami of Ohio (2-1, Aug. 26). Audrey Lee owns UCD's lone goal to date, while goalkeeper Sarah Lopez owns a 3.60 goals-against average and .625 save percentage. Michigan leads the all-time series against UC Davis 3-0, including a 9-0 victory in the most recent matchup in 2017 in Ann Arbor.
• Old Dominion is 0-1 entering the weekend after falling to Delaware, 4-2, in its season opener last Sunday (Aug. 27). Marlon de Bruijne and Sanci Molkenboer both have a goal scored this season; de Bruijne led the Monarchs in scoring in 2022 with 14 markers. Goalkeeper Suus Broers owns a 4.00 goals-against average and a .200 save percentage. Michigan trails in the all-time series against Old Dominion 7-4 and has lost the last two meetings, including a 6-1 decision in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
• Junior Abby Tamer will redshirt the 2023 season to train and compete with the USA Field Hockey Women's National Team in its bid to qualify for the 2024 Olympics. Tamer, a 2022 NFHCA All-West Region second-team honoree who has accumulated 13 goals and nine assists over 39 games played and two seasons at Michigan, earned her first senior-level international cap and goal in June.
