KENT, Ohio -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team earned a strong bounceback win, scoring twice early in the third quarter to defeat Kent State 3-1 on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 17) at the Golden Flashes' Murphy-Mellis Field.
Kent State (2-6) evened the score with a penalty-corner goal early in the third quarter, at 30:51, but the Wolverines (5-3) responded with two goals of their own over the next four minutes to surge ahead.
Freshman Kelsey Reviello has a hand in both, firing a hard shot off the KSU goalkeeper's pads, and senior Kate McLaughlin corralled the rebound in front and banged it back into the cage for her second goal of the season at 32:38. Reviello scored herself two minutes later, at 34:49, burying a direct corner shot from the arc after taking the insert directly from senior Lora Clarke, who earned the assist.
Clarke and Reviello also connected for the Wolverines' first marker of the contest at 3:19, early in the opening quarter. Clarke inserted to Reviello on U-M's first corner chance, and the Wolverine rookie fired one to the left post, where Clarke got her stick on it to tip it in for her second goal.
Reviello, who has a goal in each of the last four games, now leads the Wolverines in goal scoring, while Clarke owns 10 points with two goals and a career-high six assists.
Michigan outshot the Golden Flashes 12-8 while penalty corners were even at five. Junior/sophomore goalkeeper Caylie McMahon earned one save in the Wolverine cage, while KSU goalie Cecile van Eijck stopped six of nine U-M shots on goal.
The Wolverines (5-3) will return home to host No. 1 Iowa at 6 p.m. next Friday (Sept. 22) at Phyllis Ocker Field. Admission is free to regular-season home games, while the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
