LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell to Loyola Marymount, 9-1 on Wednesday night (Feb. 28) at Pace Stadium.
Michigan (3-6) had chances to score offensively stranding 11 runners on base but only managed one run. On the mound, Kurt Barr earned the start and was strong for the first two innings before the Lions struck on offense. U-M used seven total pitchers on the mound and 16 players took an at-bat.
Loyola Marymount (5-4) scattered two runs in the third and a run in the fourth before a five-run fifth inning provided LMU a lead that U-M was unable to overcome.
Bradley Navarro led off the game getting hit by a pitch and reached second base with his first career stolen base but three consecutive outs stranded him at second. Barr held LMU scoreless through the first two innings and allowed just one base runner. In the top of the third, Navarro reached again on a hit-by-pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch with two outs but a strikeout ended the inning.
The Lions got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third scoring two runs on three hits. U-M had one of its best chances of the night in the top of the fourth with the bases loaded with one out. Mitch Voit doubled to lead off the inning and loaded the bases after a Cole Caruso single and Collin Priest walk. Michigan did not convert as a popout to the shortstop and a strikeout ended the inning. The Lions added another run in the fourth after a one-out double who scored on an error.
Navarro doubled with one out in the fifth inning but once again was stranded on base. LMU added to its lead with a five-run fifth inning to take an 8-0 lead. The Lions used two solo home runs, a double, two hit batters, a walk and an error to move around the bases. U-M had another bases-loaded chance in the top of the sixth with a hit by pitch and two walks to load the bases with no outs. However, a strikeout, popout and flyout ended the inning.
In the seventh, U-M strung together two hits with two outs as Voit doubled and Kim singled. Voit scored on the single to give U-M its first run of the game. LMU got the run back in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single. The Wolverines drew a one-out walk in the top of the eighth, but Stanton was left on base. LMU threatened with runners on the corners in the bottom of the inning, but Alexander Ogg managed to keep LMU scoreless in his Michigan debut. U-M went down in order in the ninth to end the game.
The Wolverines will be back in action on Friday (March 1) in the Dodgertown Classic against UCLA at 5 p.m. PT in Jackie Robinson Stadium. The game will be available on PAC-12 Live.
