
Wolverines Fall in Series Finale Against No. 18 Chanticleers

CONWAY, S.C. -- The University of Michigan baseball team got on the scoreboard early, but big innings vexed the Wolverines in an 11-6 loss to No. 18-ranked Coastal Carolina on Sunday afternoon (March 10) at Springs Brooks Stadium.
Michigan (5-11) took an early lead with a home run from Jonathan Kim in the first inning and Will Rogers in the second. The Wolverines fell behind in the third and tried to come back late with one run in the seventh and two in the ninth, but could not overcome the Chanticleers.
Coastal Carolina (13-2) used a five-run third inning and a three-run sixth to help score 11 runs.
After two outs to start the first inning, Stephen Hrustich singled to right-center field for the first hit of the game. Kim then homered to left-center to give U-M a 2-0 lead.
Michigan added to its lead with another two-out home run, this time on a Rogers solo shot in the second inning. Coastal Carolina cut the Wolverines' lead to 3-2 after a two-run home run in the bottom half of the frame.
Michigan loaded the bases with two outs in the third, but could not push a run home. The Chanicleers grabbed the lead, touching starter Mitch Voit for five runs in the home half -- powered by a trio of home runs -- and never looked back.
Over the next three innings, U-M tallied only one baserunner, while the Chanticleers added a run in the fourth and three in the sixth to take a 10-3 lead. Kurt Barr, the Wolverines fourth pitcher used in the sixth, entered in a bases-loaded jam amd and induced a groundout to second to end the frame.
The Wolverines got one run back in the seventh. Mack Timbrook reached on an error and scored on a Hrustich triple off the left-center field wall. Barr struck out two in a scoreless bottom of the seventh.
Rogers singled to lead off the ninth, advanced to second on a groundout and when Voit -- who moved to first base from the mound in the fifth inning -- homered to left for his second of the season. U-M was unable to do any more damage and fell 11-6.
The Wolverines return home for a four-game homestand, starting on Tuesday (March 12) against Toledo at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
