
Michigan Takes Down Toledo With 12-Inning Walk-Off Win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A Cole Caruso single down the left-field line in the bottom of the 12th inning scored Mack Timbrook to lead the University of Michigan baseball team to a 7-6 walk-off win over Toledo on Tuesday afternoon (March 12) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
With the game tied at six and U-M reliever Kurt Barr stranding a pair of Toledo runners in the top of the 12th, Michigan too to the plate in the bottom half. Timbrook singled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a two-out Trevor Kilinski single. Caruso came to the plate and ripped the first pitch he saw down the line in left to score Timbrook and end the game.
Trailing 6-0 after and inning and a half, Michigan (6-11) battled back with a three-run second and two-run third before tying the game in the sixth. Nine different U-M players tallied hits on the night. Stephen Hrustich led the way with three hits and a run scored while Kyle Dernedde collected three RBI. Ricky Kidd started the day on the mound, pitched two innings and allowed six runs (one earned) over his two innings. The trio of Brandon Mann, Jacob Denner and Barr combined to throw 10 scoreless innings of relief -- with Barr (1-1) tossing six to earn the win
Toledo (7-9) jumped out to an early lead with a leadoff home run in the first inning and added five more in the second, aided by a bases-loaded miscue in center field, take a 6-0 lead.
The Wolverines responded in the bottom of the second with a two-run double from Dernedde that scored Bradley Navarro and Joe Longo. After a groundout, Dernedde advanced to third and scored on a Timbrook sacrifice fly.
Brandon Mann took over for Kidd and kept the Rockets scoreless in the third. U-M cut the Rockets' lead to one in the home half, after singles from Hrustich and Jonathan Kim led off the inning. Caruso advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt, and both scored on a Navarro single to right field.
The Wolverines drew even at six in the bottom of the sixth started by a hit-by-pitch from Caruso, who stole second base and scored on a single from Kyle Dernedde.
Barr took the mound in the seventh and held the Rockets scoreless the rest of the way. The Wolverines were unable to score from the seventh through 11th frames until Caruso and U-M broke through in the 12th.
The Wolverines will host their first weekend series of the year, Friday through Sunday (March 15-17) against San Diego, at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. First pitch for Friday's (March 15) series opener is scheduled for 3 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
