ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell 16-6 in a midweek non-conference game against Michigan State on Tuesday afternoon (March 26) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (9-16) was led by Stephen Hrustich, who collected two hits -- one of which was his team-leading eighth home run -- with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Mitch Voit and AJ Garcia each posted two hits and an RBI.
Michigan State (10-12) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but the Wolverines responded with two runs in the bottom half of the frame. Joonsung Park hit an RBI to score Will Rogers home, and a Garcia bunt single plated Park and the Wolverines had an early 2-1 lead.
In the top of the third, the Spartans matched the Wolverines with two runs of their own. In the bottom half of the inning, Michigan responded to tie the game at three with a sacrifice fly from Rogers that scored Hrustich.
MSU reclaimed the lead 5-3 in the fifth on a two-run double in the top of the fourth and continued to add to its lead while keeping U-M's bats quiet. The Spartans scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to take a 9-3 lead. A rain delay in the bottom of the eighth did little to slow Michigan State, which added seven runs in the top half of the ninth.
Michigan attempted a rally in the bottom of the ninth when Garcia singled to open the inning, stole second and scored on a Voit single. Two batters later, Hrustich brought Voit around to score with a homer to left-center, but the three runs were not enough and the game ended 16-6 in favor of the visitors.
Starter Wyatt Novara faced three batters in the opening inning before being relieved by Chase Allen -- one of nine relievers used in the game. Ricky Kidd (1-2) took the loss after tossing 2.1 innings and allowing two runs and three hits.
U-M will continue its homestand with a three-game series against Maryland beginning on Friday (March 29) at Ray Fisher Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
