
Michigan Rallies but Falls Late to Maryland In Series Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell in a back-and-forth battle against Maryland on Friday night (March 29) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, losing the series opener 11-9.
Michigan (9-17, 2-2 Big Ten) was led by Cole Caruso and Mack Timbrook who both tallied three hits on the day with Timbrook adding two runs. Will Rogers pinch-hit in the fourth inning and hit a three-run home run to tie the game. Dylan Vigue earned the start on the mound and struck out four.
Maryland (20-6, 3-1 Big Ten) led 5-0 after three innings. The Terrapins scored one in the first, three in the second with a single and a double, and one in the third. Michigan was held scoreless in the first three innings and left three runners on base. Sachem Ramos entered the game on the mound in relief of Vigue and stranded three runners on base to keep the Terps scoreless in the fourth.
The Wolverine offense came alive in the bottom of the inning with five runs to tie the game. Collin Priest led off the inning with a double and scored on a single after he advanced on a wild pitch. After another single and a fielder's choice, Timbrook hit a ground-rule double which scored Caruso. Will Rogers pinch hit and hit a 417-foot home run to left field which scored Timbrook and Kyle Dernedde and tied the game at five. U-M got two more baserunners in the inning, but the score remained tied at five.
Kurt Barr entered the game and pitched a scoreless fifth inning with two strikeouts, but the U-M bats were retired in order. Maryland retook the lead with a solo home run to lead off the top of the sixth inning as U-M was held scoreless again. Barr pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning with two more strikeouts before U-M gave him the lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Voit singled to center field to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a passed ball and flyout. Jack Counsell hit a pinch-hit sacrifice flyout which scored Voit and tied the game at six. Back-to-back doubles from Dylan Stanton and Caruso gave U-M the lead as Stanton scored.
Barr and Rogers kept the Terrapins scoreless in the eighth as Rogers forced a groundout to leave two runners on. Timbrook singled up the middle to start off the bottom of the eighth inning and advanced to third after a single from Rogers and a wild pitch. Voit grounded out, but Timbrook was able to score which put Michigan up 8-6.
Maryland used four hits, two walks and a hit-by-pitch to score five in the top of the ninth and take an 11-8 lead.
Cooper Mullens drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth and scored on a Caruso single, but U-M was unable to come back and fell 11-9 in the series opener.
U-M will look to even the series against Maryland on Saturday (March 30) with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. and the game streaming live on B1G+.
