ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team used a late rally to beat Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Wednesday afternoon (April 10th) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (15-19) trailed after the fourth inning before Mitch Voit entered the game in the eighth inning with a runner on after Jack Counsell drew a walk to open the frame. Voit took the second pitch he saw out of the park which put Michigan ahead 2-1. Hrustich followed with his third double of the game and scored on a wild pitch, giving Michigan a 3-1 lead.
Jacob Denner took the mound for the ninth and after a leadoff walk retired the next three batters, he faced to earn the save and solidify Michigan's 3-1 victory.
The Wolverines used seven pitchers on the day with five recording strikeouts and Sachem Ramos earning the start on the mound. Ramos went a career-high 3.2 innings, struck out one and allowed the only Panthers' run.
Offensively, Voit led the team in RBI with two while Stephen Hrustich tallied three doubles in the game and added the final U-M run in the eighth.
Both offenses were quiet with each team having just one base runner in each of the first three innings, but Wisconsin-Milwaukee (5-24) struck first in the fourth inning with an RBI double.
After the Panthers scored in the top of the fourth, U-M had its best chance in the bottom of the frame. A leadoff double from Hrustich and a walk to Collin Priest gave U-M two runners on with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt, the runners advanced to scoring position but a foul-out and groundout prevented the runners from scoring.
In the fifth, U-M converted a double play to escape a leadoff walk but left two runners on in the bottom of the frame after a groundout. Wyatt Novara took the mound with two outs in the sixth and got the batter looking for the final out of the inning. Alexander Ogg pitched a scoreless seventh inning while U-M went down in order in both the sixth and seventh.
In the top of the eighth, Ricky Kidd took the mound with two outs and a runner on third and was able to strike out the Milwaukee batter to end the inning which gave U-M a chance heading into the bottom of the eighth down 1-0.
U-M will continue its home stand with a three-game conference series this weekend (April 12-14) against Minnesota beginning on Friday (April 12) at 8 p.m. on Big Ten Network.
