U-M Defeats Ohio State to Advances to Big Ten Tournament Semifinals

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The fourth-seeded, No. 19-ranked University of Michigan men's lacrosse team defeated No. 5 seed Ohio State 15-9 in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Saturday (April 27) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
With the victory, U-M has defeated Ohio State in four straight contests, and advances to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals against No. 1-seeded Johns Hopkins on Thursday (May 2) at 6 p.m. at Ohio State lacrosse Stadium in Columbus. The contest will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
Graduate student Justin Tiernan set the U-M single-season record for goals in a season with 47, while senior Michael Boehm became the first player in program history to reach 100 career assists.
Ohio St. (6-8) opened the scoring at the 10:37 mark of the first quarter. The Wolverines (8-6) tied the game just over one minute later (9:18) with a goal from sophomore Mason Whitney, assisted by graduate Cathal Roberts.
The tie was broken by an Ohio State goal at 7:31 before the Buckeyes increased their lead with another score at the 2:35 mark. Following a Michigan timeout, Tiernan found the back of the net off a pass from Boehm at the two-minute mark. A goal from sophomore Bo Lockwood with 37 seconds left briefly leveled the score before Ohio State scored with 14 seconds left in the first quarter, bringing the score to 4-3 in favor of the Buckeyes.
The Wolverines took their first lead of the game in the second quarter with back-to-back individual efforts from Boehm (12:43) and junior Ryan Cohen (11:53). Michigan extended the lead at the 9:15 mark with another goal from Tiernan, who set the single-season record for goals in a season with 47.
The Buckeyes recorded another goal at the 6:52 mark before the Wolverines responded quickly with a goal from junior John Morgan with 5:37 left in the half. With a 7-5 lead at halftime, U-M also outshot OSU 26-13.
The second half was scoreless until Cohen converted at the 11:21 mark of the third quarter, followed by OSU quickly responding with a goal of its own at 10:48 before Cohen scored his third goal of the game with 8:50 left in the third quarter. Junior Aidan Mulholland also got on the scoresheet at the 4:26 mark, converting on an unassisted effort. With 16 seconds left in the third quarter, Tiernan tallied his third goal of the game with a helper from Morgan, bringing the score to 11-7.
U-M's lead increased at the 13:50 mark of the fourth quarter with a goal from graduate Christian Ronda as Boehm provided the assist.
Following an Ohio State goal at the 10:43 mark, U-M went on a dominant offensive run, scoring three goals in under two minutes. Senior Justin Wietfeldt scored after a faceoff win at 10:37 followed by goals from Boehm (9:09) and Roberts (9:01) to bring the score to 15-8. A U-M penalty allowed OSU to covert on the extra-man opportunity with 6:33 left in the game, which brought the final score to 15-9.
Ten players found the back of the net in the game as Boehm led the scoring with four points (two goals, two assists) while Tiernan and Cohen tallied three goals each. Wietfeldt recorded two points (one goal, one assist) and went 13-of-24 at the dot with six ground balls as Roberts and senior Jack Whitney caused a pair of turnovers apiece. Sophomore goalie Hunter Taylor made 12 stops in goal, with eight coming in the second half.
