ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team capped off a sweep of Long Beach State on Sunday (April 28), taking down the Dirtbags 5-4 at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (23-21) was led by Stephen Hrustich, who recorded two RBI on a solo home run and an RBI single, and Will Rogers, who also hit a solo shot. Mack Timbrook went 3-for-4 on the day with a double and a run.
Dylan Vigue (1-3) earned the victory in a six-inning relief performance, allowing six hits and collecting five strikeouts. Jacob Denner made his 85th career appearance and recorded the save, his fourth of the season, on three pitches.
Hrustich set the tone early, robbing Long Beach State of a run with a tremendous catch to end the top of the first, before blasting a the second pitch he saw over the left-center field wall to put the Wolverines up 1-0 in the bottom half.
The bulk of Michigan's scoring came in the bottom of the fifth, when a botched pickoff attempt allowed Timbrook to cross home plate. A squeeze bunt dropped by Cooper Mullens led to Kyle Dernedde beating out the throw to the plate, and a base hit from Hrustich scored AJ Garcia to give U-M a 4-0 lead.
The Dirtbags scored their first run in the top of the sixth on an RBI double, but the Wolverines quickly answered with one of their own off the bat of Rogers -- a solo shot that sailed 398 feet over the left-field wall.
Despite Long Beach State tacking on three runs -- one in the eighth and two in the ninth -- a 6-3 double play helped stem the tide, sealing a 5-4 Wolverines victory.
Michigan will wrap up its homestand on Tuesday (Apr. 30) at 4 p.m. when they take on Kent State in a midweek matchup at Ray Fisher Stadium. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
