U-M Outlasts Oakland for Second Straight Win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team withstood a tough test from Oakland, winning 2-1 on Sunday (Aug. 25) at U-M Soccer Stadium to take its second victory in as many matches.

Senior Jason Bucknor made an immediate impact in his season debut, scoring one goal and assisting the other U-M tally. Grayson Elmquist scored the first goal of his Michigan career to give the Maize and Blue a one-goal edge. Another newcomer, Beto Soto assisted on Bucknor's goal in the first half. Despite getting outshot 8-7 Michigan was more efficient with its attempts, putting four on target and two past the Oakland goalkeeper.

After a tight opening 27 minutes, Michigan (2-0-0) scored its first goal of the afternoon as Soto lofted a ball into the penalty box that found the head of Bucknor who punched it home to put U-M in front 1-0 at the 28th minute. Oakland (0-2-0) responded in the 42nd minute when Jack Komplarens dented the net from close range to tie the game at one at the end of the first half.

Michigan broke the deadlock in the 56th minute as Bucknor lofted a pass down the left side of the pitch that found the feet of Elmquist, who calmly deposited the ball in the back of the net to put the Wolverines up 2-1.

U-M's defense held firm in the final 15 minutes of the match, allowing only two shots neither of which were on frame. Hayden Evans earned his first win of the new season in his first start to propel Michigan to its first 2-0 start since the 2020-21 spring campaign and second consecutive undefeated start through two matches.

Michigan will continue its seven-game homestand on Friday (Aug. 30) when Oregon State visits U-M Soccer Stadum for a 7 p.m. match that will be streamed live on B1G+.
