
Three Wolverines Named All-B1G Lead U-M to Fourth-Place Finish at B1G Championships

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan men's cross country team finished fourth at the Big Ten Championships on Friday (Oct. 31) at Forest Akers East Golf Course, led by a trio of Wolverines who earned All-Big Ten honors for their efforts.
Oregon took the team title with 36 points, while Michigan State (68), Wisconsin (90) and Washington (135) rounded out the top five.
Senior Nathan Lopez led the squad through the first kilometer, coming in at No. 10 ahead of Trent McFarland in 16th. Caleb Jarema (22nd) and Luke Venhuizen (26th) represented the Wolverines in the top 30, putting U-M at second overall at the first checkpoint.
Michigan and Michigan State fought for second the majority of the race, swapping places until the halfway mark, when the Spartans sat in second place and the Maize and Blue sat third.
Lopez moved into sixth with the final three kilometers to go, while Venhuizen sat in 16th, McFarland in 22nd and Jarema 27th. Nolan Clark (32nd) and Brendan Herger (38th) were just outside the top 30.
At the 6K mark, Lopez moved into fifth for his highest position of the race. Venhuizen dropped to 19th, but McFarland moved up two spots to 20th.
With the final kilometer remaining, Lopez fell three spots to eighth while both Venhuizen and McFarland moved up five spots to sit in 14th and 15th, respectively.
Lopez was the lead Wolverine for the third time this season, finishing 11th with a time of 23:41.6. McFarland (23:46.9) overtook Venhuizen (23:47.7) to finish 14th and 15th, respectively. Jarema placed 27th (24:05.4) and Herger was 35th (24:15.3). Freshman Luke Alverson made his Big Ten Championships debut, finishing 36th with a personal-best time of 24:15.9.
Lopez, McFarland and Venhuizen were named All-Big Ten second team for finishing in the top 20.
Michigan will return to action at 11 a.m. CT on Friday, Nov. 14, at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Evansville, Ind., where the Wolverines will vie for a bid to the NCAA Championships.
