ARLINGTON, Texas -- The University of Michigan baseball team took an early lead but could not hold it in a 5-1 setback against Kansas State on Saturday (Feb. 22) as part of the College Baseball Series at Globe Life Field.
Michigan (4-2) tallied five hits with Jeter Ybarra collecting two with a single and double. Jonathan Kim scored the lone Michigan in the first inning. Starter Kurt Barr (0-1) took the loss after being charged with two runs, none earned, while striking out four with three walks.
Kim opened the game with a leadoff double and two batters later, Ybarra brought him home with a double of his own to give the Wolverines a quick 1-0 lead.
Kansas State (3-4) scored twice in the first to claim the lead, courtesy of two errors and a pair of hits. Barr struck out the side to limit the damage, but the Wildcats led 2-1 after one inning.
Both teams had good chances in the fourth inning but could not push runs across. Benny Casillas and Greg Pace Jr. drew walks but a flyout ended the inning. The Wildcats put two on via walks to open the bottom of the frame, but Josh Kasner came into relief and retired the side on just four pitches with the help of a 6-4-3 double play.
The game remained 2-1 until the fifth inning when the Wildcats added three runs on three hits -- two of them home runs -- to extend their lead to 5-1. Max Debiec came on for Kasner and recorded the final two outs of the fifth and fanned two as part of a 1-2-3 sixth inning to slow the KSU bats. He was strong again in the seventh, but the U-M offense went without a baserunner from the sixth through eighth innings.
Tate Carey fired a scoreless eighth to give U-M a chance at a comeback. Brayden Jefferis and Kim drew two-out walks, but a flyout to the warning track ended the game.
Michigan will close out its time at the College Baseball Series on Sunday (Feb. 23) against No. 5-ranked Arkansas. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. CST, and the game will be streamed live on FloCollege.
