Michigan Readies for ITA Indoors as No. 2 Seed

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team (4-0) will head to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship as the No. 2 seed in the Champaign region. The event is set for Feb. 7-11 at both the Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign and the Combe Tennis Center in Evanston. Up first for the Wolverines is No. 7 seed LSU on Friday morning (Feb. 7) at 9 a.m. CST.

• The Wolverines are making their 13th appearance in the last 16 seasons at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. This marks back-to-back years for the Wolverines at the national event. The event is back in the Midwest after being held in Seattle for the past two seasons. For the first time, the
• All of Michigan's trips to the national event have come in the past 16 years since the ITA went to the Kick-Off format with four-team qualifying sites. U-M's first trip to the event came in 2010 after winning the ITA Kick-Off at Arkansas. This season, Michigan defeated Yale and UCSB at the Varsity Tennis Center to punch its ticket to the event for the third straight season.
• As a singles-elimination tournament, teams will play one match each day up until Sunday when the four semifinalists will have an off day to allow the teams competing at Illinois to travel up to Northwestern for the semifinals and finals on Monday and Tuesday. All teams are guaranteed to play at least three matches at the Team Indoor Championships in either the main draw or in consolation matches. All consolation matches will conclude Sunday.
• Michigan received the No. 2 seed at the Champaign site and will face No. 7 seed LSU. Joining them at the Atkins Tennis Center are (seeds listed) No. 1 Texas A&M, No. 3 UCLA, No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 5 Texas, No. 6 Oklahoma and No. 8 Illinois. Teams competing at Northwestern are No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 North Carolina, No. 3 Virginia, No. 4 Stanford, No. 5 Auburn, No. 6 Tennessee, No. 7 Pepperdine and No. 8 Northwestern.
• The Wolverines are 20-17 all-time at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship after reaching the championship match last season and finishing runner-up to Oklahoma State. U-M has won at least one match in each appearance. U-M went 2-1 in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2017 and in 2023. Last season, Michigan picked up wins over California, Virginia and NC State. Â
• U-M is coming off a 2-0 week that featured a pair of ranked wins over No. 5 Virginia and No. 21 Florida. Against the Cavaliers, Michigan dropped the doubles point before rallying with four singles wins from Julia Fliegner, Reese Miller, Jessica Bernales and Emily Sartz-Lunde. In the 7-0 shutout of the Gators, U-M won the doubles point and dropped just one singles set. Â
• U-M has four ranked singles players in No. 4 Fliegner, No. 30 Piper Charney, No. 36 Lily Jones and No. 66 Miller. The Wolverines have four ranked doubles teams. Â
Fliegner is one singles win away from becoming the 11th member of the 100-win club. Chiara Lommer was the last Wolverine to hit the 100-win mark during the 2021 season.
• Michigan is 2-0 all-time against LSU, facing the Tigers in the 2016 ITA National Team Indoor Championship and in the 2021 NCAA Tournament. LSU has one ranked singles player and qualified for the event by advancing out of the ITA Kick-Off at Florida.
• Michigan has won three weekly honors from the conference this season, with Miller (Jan. 15) and Charney (Jan. 29) each picking up Player of the Week honors. Sartz-Lunde was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Jan. 15, with Bernales picking up the honor this week (Feb. 5).
• Head coach Ronni Bernstein enters her 18th season as the head coach, holding a 527-192 overall coaching record. She is currently eighth nationally among active coaches in wins. Bernstein ranks 18th all-time in victories.
