ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Colby Turner and Cole Caruso hit home runs to start and end a late four-run rally, but the runs were not enough as USC defeated the University of Michigan baseball team 7-4 on Friday (March 14) in the series opener at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Turner hit his second home run in as many games in the seventh inning and Caruso hit a two-run shot in the eighth, accounting for two of Michigan's hits on the day. Mitch Voit tallied two hits -- the only Wolverine to have more than one -- and scored on Jeter Ybarra's single in the eighth. David Lally Jr. (1-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing four runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts over six innings. Relievers Preston Barr and Ricky Kidd gave Michigan a chance for a comeback with scoreless eighth and ninth innings.
Both teams were held scoreless for the first two innings, but USC (10-7) finally broke through in the third. The Trojans scored four runs, two coming on a bases-loaded double down the right-field line. The runner from first was thrown out at the plate, AJ Rausch-to-Benny Casillas-to-Noah Miller. USC added two more runs to take a 4-0 lead.
U-M threatened in the bottom half, putting runners at second and third but both were left stranded.
USC added to its lead in the top of the seventh with a bases-clearing triple to go ahead 7-0. The Wolverines got on the board with a leadoff home run from Turner in the bottom of the seventh, his second in as many games. Preston Barr pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing just one hit to the Trojans.
Voit opened the bottom of the eighth with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice fly to center field. Voit scored on a single from Ybarra, and Caruso homered on the next pitch to bring the score to 7-3.
Kidd pitched a scoreless ninth to give the Maize and Blue a chance. The tying run came to the plate with runners in scoring position and two outs, but the Trojans struck out the final batter to end the game.
Michigan will return to action at Ray Fisher Stadium on Saturday (March 15) against USC. First pitch is set for noon, and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
