ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team fell 19-7 to No. 8 Notre Dame in its final non-conference contest of the season Saturday afternoon (March 15) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The visitors struck first, adding a tally just over a minute into the opening quarter. Michigan answered two minutes later, but it was all Notre Dame for the remainder of the frame after four consecutive goals extended its advantage to 5-1 heading into the second quarter.
Sophomores Jack Jenkins and Nick Roode scored back-to-back goals just over halfway through the second stanza to send the Wolverines into the locker room trailing 8-3 at halftime.
Junior Hunter Taylor scooped up a ground ball in the crease at the 9:40 mark of the third and fed classmate Carson Billig, who brought the ball down the field uncontested before sniping his first career goal. However, the Michigan momentum was short-lived as Notre Dame weathered the storm, following U-M's tally with six goals in the next five minutes -- and seven consecutive the rest of the period -- to take a 15-4 lead.
The string of goals was conceded courtesy of five consecutive faceoff wins by the visitors, who went 20-for-30 overall on the dot.
Graduate student Lukas Stanat eventually ended the 9-0 Notre Dame run with eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and added another score two minutes later, but were not enough as the Fighting Irish handed the Wolverines their first home loss.
Michigan opens its Big Ten slate next Saturday (March 22) when it travels to College Park for a noon contest at Maryland that will be streamed live on B1G+.
