ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team capped its series against USC with a dominant 11-0 run-rule victory in seven innings. The Wolverines won the finale at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, on Sunday afternoon (March 16).
Michigan (11-8, 3-3 Big Ten) was led by Colby Turner and Mitch Voit at the plate. Turner tallied three hits and a career-high six RBIs, while Voit went 3-for-3 with three runs and four RBIs. Benny Casillas also scored three times in the contest on two hits. Kurt Barr (1-2) and Will Rogers combined for a shutout on the mound. Barr pitched six scoreless innings with four strikeouts and scattered five hits, while Rogers struck out three in his lone inning.
USC (11-8, 2-4 Big Ten) tallied one hit in the first inning, but three groundouts kept the Trojans off the board. U-M then took an early lead, scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Jonathan Kim and Voit both singled, and Turner came up clutch with a two-out single to score both runners.
Barr was strong through the next three innings, allowing just two baserunners over the stretch. The Michigan offense gave him a big cushion after sending nine batters to the plate in the second. Matt Spear opened the inning with a single, and Casillas reached on a fielder's choice for runners on the corners and two outs. A hit by pitch loaded the bases, and Voit cleared them with a three-run triple. Voit scored on a single from Jeter Ybarra, and Turner capped off the inning with an RBI double to put U-M up 7-0.
The Wolverines added to their lead in the fourth, with Casillas opening the inning with a single. After two walks loaded the bases, Turner hit a double to centerfield, allowing all three runners to score and putting Michigan up 10-0. The Trojans threatened to get runs back, but Barr escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fifth, and a leadoff double in the sixth went unscathed.
U-M added another run in the bottom of the sixth after a leadoff double from Casillas and a single from Voit brought him home. Rogers came in to pitch in the seventh inning and recorded three strikeouts in four batters to secure the run-rule shutout win.
Michigan will close out its four-game homestand on Tuesday (March 18) against Western Michigan at 4 p.m., streaming live on B1G+.
