ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13 University of Michigan men's lacrosse team (7-7) fell to Rutgers, 11-8, on Saturday (April 26) in the Big Ten quarterfinals at the U-M Lacrosse Stadium. With the loss, the Wolverines' postseason hopes now hinge on the NCAA Selection Show, which will air live on ESPNU on Sunday, May 4, at 9:30 p.m.
U-M was limited to a season low 10 points on the day but stayed within striking distance early with a smothering defensive effort. The Michigan defense forced four turnovers out of Rutgers (7-8) in the first half, scooping up 14 ground balls and winning seven out of the first 13 faceoffs. Hunter Taylor anchored the backline with 10 saves in the opening two quarters.
After trailing by one heading into halftime, Aidan Mulholland drew Michigan even and earned his fourth career hat trick one minute into the second half. The Scarlet Knights would dominate the remainder of the quarter, scoring three unanswered goals on two failed Wolverine clear attempts, breaking open an authoritative 9-6 lead.
Mulholland eventually ended the Rutgers rally with his fourth goal of the afternoon, but two consecutive Scarlet Knights' scores across the third and fourth frames put the game out of reach for the Wolverines.
Offensively, Mulholland led the way with four goals, matching his career high. Ryan Cohen contributed three goals and one assist, while Bo Lockwood chipped in with a goal and an assist.
