LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell 3-2 to Nebraska on Friday night (May 9) at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park in the series opener of their three-game set.
Michigan (31-18, 14-11 Big Ten) got a quality start from Kurt Barr, who scattered six hits across six innings and struck out seven while allowing three runs. Benny Casillas walked twice and scored and scored both times. The Wolverines tallied seven total hits, each coming from a different batter.
Casillas opened the game drawing a walk, stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Mitch Voit brought him home with an infield single, and the Wolverines led 1-0.
Nebraska (25-25, 12-13 Big Ten) registered back-to-back singles to open the bottom of the first and had put runners in scoring position with no outs. A fielder's choice, an out at second base on a ball in the dirt, and a strikeout kept the Huskers scoreless in the first.
Nebraska scored two runs in the second, but Barr stranded a pair of runners to keep the score at 2-1.
Barr settled in for the next three innings, allowing just two baserunners while striking out five and keeping the Huskers at two runs. The U-M offense went scoreless for the next three innings, going down in order in the fourth and tallying one single in both the fifth and sixth innings.
The Cornhuskers added a run in the sixth on a bases-loaded groundout to hold a 3-1 lead heading into the seventh inning.
A Noah Miller pinch-hit single led off the seventh, but a strikeout and double play ended the frame. Max Debiec started the seventh and faced the minimum three batters, including one strikeout.
U-M put the first two runners on in the eighth with a walk of Casillas and Brayden Jefferis singling through the right side. Jeter Ybarra later singled to load the bases. Caruso drew a walk to plate Casillas, to cut the to one, 3-2, but that was as close as the Wolverines got.
Michigan will return to action against Nebraska at 1 p.m. on Saturday (May 10) at Haymarket Park. The contest will be streamed live on B1G+.
