Michigan Sweeps FAU to Open Michigan Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team swept Florida Atlantic (25-22, 25-23, 25-20) in a hard-fought battle on Friday night (Sept. 5) in its first match of the Michigan Invitational at Crisler Center.
Michigan (4-0) was led by a double-double from Allison Jacobs, who tallied a match-leading 22 kills and added 10 digs. She hit .422 in the match, committing just three errors on 45 swings. Amalia Simmons also had an impressive match, hitting .400 with nine kills and one error on 20 swings. Both setters recorded double-digit assists, with Morgan Burke recording 21 assists and Ellie White adding 16.
Florida Atlantic (4-2) opened the match with a block, but a kill from Simmons tied the match at one. Both teams traded points, seeing six tie scores until U-M took a 9-8 lead with a kill from Lydia Johnson. A block by Jenna Hanes and Johnson put the Wolverines up by two, and a kill from Jacobs put U-M up 11-8 and forced an Owls timeout. Michigan held the lead until a 4-0 run from FAU tied the match at 17, and it eventually took the lead, 18-17. A kill from Simmons tied the match at 18, but the Owls inched ahead again. A Florida Atlantic attack error tied the match at 19, but a kill from Hanes put Michigan back in front. U-M held off the Owls with Jacobs sealing the deal with a kill. In total, the first set saw 11 ties and five lead changes.
The second set began with the teams splitting the first four points, and later traded points until FAU went on a three-point spurt to go up 10-7 and forced a Michigan timeout. Michigan hung around and eventually tied the set at 14 with Jacobs and Serena Nyambio combining on a block. With the score tied at 15, Jacobs recorded a kill to put Michigan up 16-15 it did not lose the lead for the rest of the set. Florida Atlantic tied the match at 19 with a kill, but a Sydney Schnichels kill put Michigan up 20-19, and a kill from Simmons forced the second FAU timeout of the set. The Owls brought the set to within one at 23-22 to force a U-M timeout, but a service error and kill from Jacobs gave Michigan the second set, 25-23.
Michigan tallied the first point of the third set with a kill from Johnson, but a service error tied the match at one. The teams continued to trade points until an 8-3 Michigan run put it up 15-10, triggering the media timeout. On the run, Jacobs tallied two kills, Schnichels and Nyabmio had one and Nyabmio and Johnson combined for a block. Out of the timeout, FAU cut the U-M lead to two, 16-14, but U-M held off the Owls and two kills from Simmons at 18-14 and 20-16 caused FAU timeouts. After the second, the teams traded the next four points until a kill from Jacobs put U-M up 23-19. Jacobs tallied another kill, setting up match point, but a kill from FAU held the Wolverines from their first chance. On the next opportunity, Jacobs finished the match with her 22nd kill for a 25-20 set-three win.
The Wolverines continue the Michigan Invitational on Saturday night (Sept. 6) when they host Marshall at Crisler Center. First serve is set fr 7 p.m., and the match will be streamed live on B1G+.
