
U-M Sweeps Mercyhurst, Mount St. Mary’s to Finish Midwest Invite Undefeated

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan water polo team completed a 4-0 weekend at the Midwest Invite with victories over Mercyhurst, 15-4, and Mount St. Mary's, 17-5, on Sunday (Feb. 15) at Canham Natatorium. The tournament marked Michigan's only home regular-season event.
Michigan defeated Mercyhurst (0-4) by an 11-goal margin before following with a 12-goal win over Mount St. Mary's (2-8).
Bailee Swindells led the Wolverines with 14 goals across the four-game weekend, including two six-goal performances Sunday. Emma Gustafsson added at least two goals in each contest and totaled 13 points.
Michigan rotated all three goalkeepers during the tournament. Sophia Bunnell started each game and recorded 30 saves across four matchups, while Katie Delaney and Tyler Jackson contributed eight saves apiece.
#16 Michigan 15, Mercyhurst 4
Michigan controlled both ends early, scoring 11 first-half goals while holding Mercyhurst scoreless. Gustafsson recorded a first-quarter hat trick, including back-to-back goals in the opening two minutes.
Emilia Mladjan, Maddy Scarth and Claire Eusey contributed during a 5-0 opening stretch. In the second quarter, four freshmen found the scoresheet, as Sydney Brandvold tallied twice and Ryland Smith, Maya Mladjan and Swindells each added one.
Jackson entered in the second quarter and posted eight saves. Michigan added four second-half goals to secure the 15-4 victory.
#16 Michigan 17, Mount St. Mary's 5
Swindells followed with another six-goal performance against Mount St. Mary's, connecting twice with Smith, who also added a goal.
After conceding to open the third quarter, Michigan responded with a six-goal run, including a backhand finish from Kaia Levenfeld, to extend the lead to 14-3.
Michigan opened the game with six straight goals and held Mount St. Mary's scoreless in the first quarter. Eusey scored early in the second quarter and added two assists to finish with three points. Smith scored in the fourth, while Swindells added two more to close out the 17-5 win.
The Wolverines will travel to Lewisburg, Pa., next weekend for a Conference Crossover, opening with their first conference matchup against Brown on Saturday (Feb. 21) at 1 p.m.
