
Michigan Suffers Setback at No. 17 Denver

DENVER, Colo. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team suffered a 15-9 loss at No. 17 Denver on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 28) at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
The Pioneers (4-1) took an early lead over the Wolverines (3-4), but Michigan battled back to tie the game at halftime and to come within two in the third quarter against Denver. However, DU built its lead in the final quarter to secure the win.
CJ Reilly, Nick Roode and Luke Shannehan each scored a pair of goals for the Maize and Blue, while Jack Jenkins had a goal and two assists. Shannehan led the offense with four points as he added two assists to his stat line, and Adam Udell had a goal and an assist.
Rowan Clay caused two turnovers and had one ground ball, while Jackie Weller won eight faceoffs and had five ground balls. In the cage, Hunter Taylor made 11 saves.
Denver scored the first two goals of the game before Reilly cut the lead to one with 6:25 remaining in the first quarter. DU scored another pair of goals to go up 4-1, but a second goal from Reilly pulled U-M within two to close out the first quarter.
The Pioneers netted the first goal of the second quarter, but Michigan swung the momentum in its favor with 11:27 remaining in the half as Roode scored a man-up goal off a pass from Shannehan. The Wolverines controlled the tempo for the remainder of the half as Udell took a ball straight to the cage for a goal and Jenkins scored with 1:22 left in the half to take a 5-5 tie into the halftime break.
Denver outscored Michigan 5-1 in the first 10 minutes of the third quarter. However, the Wolverines worked their way within two with two goals from Shannehan, including one with 10 seconds left in the quarter, and one from Mason Vance to come within two, 11-9, going into the final quarter.
The Pioneers dominated the fourth quarter, scoring four goals en route to the win over the Wolverines.
U-M will remain on the road, traveling to Houston, Texas, for a neutral-site contest against Harvard at Kinkaid High School. The game is set to start at 2 p.m. CT.
