ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team recorded its 10th Big Ten win of the season in a 4-0 shutout of Maryland on Saturday afternoon (April 11) at the Varsity Tennis Center. U-M kept the Terps off the board by winning the doubles point and the first three singles matches to finish.
U-M struck first, taking the doubles point behind wins at No. 2 and No. 1. Michigan's No. 2 pair of Laura Rahnel and Reese Miller broke for a 3-1 lead, with Miller consolidating the break in the next game. It was all Michigan from there as the duo did not drop another game in a 6-1 win.
Michigan's No. 1 pair of Jessica Bernales and Lily Jones clinched the match's first point moments later, recording a 6-2 win. Much like Rahnel and Miller, the No. 1 pair broke at 3-1 and kept the advantage the rest of the way, picking up their eighth dual-match win as a team.
The Wolverines won four first sets in singles action when it was all said and done, getting first-set wins from Miller, Bernales, Emily Sartz-Lunde and Jones.
Miller extended the Michigan lead to 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 3 for her ninth win in Big Ten play. She broke for a 5-3 lead in the first set, but was unable to close out the set on her serve in the next game. Miller broke in the ensuing game to wrap up the first set. She raced out to a 5-0 lead in the second and dropped just one game to put the second point on the board for the home team.
Bernales quickly pushed the U-M advantage to 3-0 behind a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5. Down a break at 5-3 in the first, Bernales ripped off four straight games in the 7-5 win. She carried that momentum into the second, winning the first three games to put Michigan on the brink.
Jones dropped her second set at No. 2, with Piper Charney winning her second set at No. 1 as the two top courts headed to third sets.
Jones was broken to start her third set before winning three straight games for a 3-1 lead, while Charney was rolling at No. 1 as the two were in a race to finish.
Charney came through first, recording a 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over No. 91 Oliwia Orlinska at the top of the lineup. After dropping her first set and being broken to start the second, Charney won 12 of the next 13 games to pick up her 20th singles win of her junior season.
Michigan is back in action tomorrow (Sunday, April 12), hosting Rutgers at noon and Oakland at 4 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center.
