EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell in the series finale to Michigan State, 10-4, on Sunday afternoon (April 11) at Jeff Ishbia Field at McLane Stadium.
Michigan (20-15, 7-8 Big Ten) jumped out to an early lead, scoring in the first and third innings. Cooper Mullens led off the game with a single and moved to third on a stolen base and error. With two outs, Brayden Jefferis brought Mullens home with a single through the right side. After a scoreless second, Mullens opened the third with another single and scored on a groundout from Noah Miller.
David Lally Jr. (1-2) controlled Michigan State (12-21, 7-11 Big Ten) early, retiring the first six batters he faced, but allowed a home run and back-to-back doubles to plate three runs in the third. Lally, Wyatt Novara and Gavin DeVooght held the Spartans scoreless in the fourth and fifth, but MSU added five runs on three hits in the sixth, powered by a grand slam. The Spartans tacked on two more runs in the seventh with a two-run home run.
The Wolverines struggled after the third, managing just four baserunners over the next five innings. Colby Turner singled with two outs in the fifth, Miller was hit by a pitch in the sixth and Matthew Ossenfort doubled in the seventh, but Michigan could not plate another run.
U-M found some offense in the eighth after Jefferis doubled with two outs to bring home Turner, who reached on a walk to open the inning. On the next pitch, Dane Morrow singled up the middle to score Jefferis, but a strikeout ended the inning and halted the rally.
Michael Quedens pitched a scoreless eighth inning to give Michigan a chance, but the Wolverines managed just one more run. Ossenfort doubled to open the inning and scored on Mullens' third hit of the game. A flyout and groundout ended the game.
At the plate, the Wolverines tallied 10 hits, led by three from Mullens and two each from Turner, Jefferis and Ossenfort. Mullens scored twice and added an RBI, while Jefferis recorded a run and two RBIs. Turner extended his hitting streak to 15 games and his run-scoring streak to 12 games.
