JACKSONVILLE , Fla. -- The University of Michigan baseball team exploded for a 21-3 win in game one but fell in the nightcap, 10-2, to split a doubleheader with host Jacksonville University at the Jacksonville University Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 28) at Sessions Stadium.
Senior right-hander Chris Fetter(Carmel, Ind./Carmel) picked up the win in game one as junior/sophomore Anthony Toth(Lorain, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and sophomore Ryan LaMarre(Jackson, Mich./Lumen Christi) each posted four-RBI performances, while senior Kevin Cislo(Novi, Mich./Novi) added a 2-for-4, three-RBI day to pace the Michigan attack.
In game two, the bats fell silent -- minus the team-leading fourth home run of the season from sophomore Jake McLouth(Whitehall, Mich./Grand Rapids CC) in the ninth -- as junior starter Eric Katzman(Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) ran into trouble in the fourth inning, the first of three straight three-run innings for the Dolphins in a 10-2 Michigan loss.
In game one, the Wolverine offense was clicking on all cylinders for Fetter, who dazzled his way through six innings, allowing just four hits and striking out seven for the win. Run support was not an issue for Fetter as U-M put up six runs in the second inning and eight more in the sixth en route to its largest offense output since a 27-6 win last season over Michigan State.
The Wolverine scoring barrage began in the second inning, with all six runs coming with two outs. Senior right fielder Nick Urban(Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall) started the rally with a hit-by-pitch and moved to third on a double down the rightfield line by junior Chris Berset(Vienna, Va./Heights School). After freshman John Lorenz(Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) reached on an error that scored Urban, Cislo delivered a two-run double to put U-M up 3-0. Toth later doubled home two more and a RBI single from LaMarre gave Michigan a 6-0 lead.
Michigan was far from done, scoring twice in the third and once each in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 10-0 lead. In the sixth, U-M posted six runs, the big blow coming on a three-run homer by LaMarre -- his third three-run blast in the last two games -- staking U-M to a 18-0 advantage.
Jacksonville scored three runs off freshman reliever Brandon Sinnery(Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy), putting up a three-run seventh, but the Wolverines answered with three of their own in the ninth for the 21-3 victory.
In game two, Michigan took a 1-0 lead into the fifth inning thanks to a RBI double by Berset in the second inning, but the Jacksonville offense got hot, scoring three runs each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings en route to a 10-2 victory.
McLouth was the lone Wolverine with two hits in the nightcap, while Berset went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The Wolverines finish off their 2009 spring trip when they face Akron on Sunday (March 1) at 10:30 a.m. in the final day of the Jacksonville University Invitational.
N O T E S
The 21 runs scored by the Wolverines in the 21-3 win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader marked the most runs scored by UM since a 27-6 win over Michigan State last season on Apr. 20, 2008.
With Saturday's split with Jacksonville, head coach Rich Maloney heads into Sunday's spring-trip finale vs. Akron needing one win to reach 500 career coaching wins in his 14-year career. Maloney has a 7-3 career record all-time vs. Akron.
Junior/sophomore DH Jake McLouth took the team batting lead, going 4-for-8 in the doubleheader; he went 2-for-4 in each game. McLouth, who has a .400 (14-for-35) batting average, belted his team-leading fourth homer in game two. McLouth has a five-game hitting streak with hits in seven of UM's eight games and he has five multi-hit games to lead the team.
Freshman 3B John Lorenz collected his first career hit with a third-inning double in the first game. Lorenz added his second hit with another double and was 2-for-3 with four runs scored in the 21-3 opening-game win.
Senior RHP Chris Fetter moved into a tie for seventh on UM's career win list at 22 with Mike Grimes (1987-89) and Pete Helt (1970-73). For the season, Fetter is 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA and 13 Ks in 11 innings.
Sophomore CF Ryan LaMarre and junior 1B Mike Dufek hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning of the opener. The last back-to-back homers for the Wolverines came when Nate Recknagel and Zach Putnam hit the round trippers at Illinois in the third inning in the series opener in a 9-5 UM win on Apr. 11, 2008.
LaMarre had four RBI in the opener to give him 11 of his team-leading 13 RBI in back-to-back games.
Sophomore/freshman OF Bryce Aspinwall collected his first career hit as a Wolverine with a ninth-inning single in the opener. He was 1-for-2 with a walk in three plate appearances.
Junior/sophomore SS Anthony Toth had a career-high four RBI in the opening win.
