LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The University of Michigan baseball team allowed three runs in the bottom of the fifth and could not muster up a comeback in a 6-5 loss at Kansas on Friday afternoon (March 13) at Hoglund Ballpark.
Senior Jackson Glines and junior Cody Bruder each had two hits, while fifth-year senior Kendall Patrick drove in a pair, including a solo home run, and junior Jacob Cronenworth scored two runs.
Michigan struck first with a pair of runs in the first. Cronenworth walked and went to second on Glines' bunt single. Both runners stole a base and moved up 90 feet on a KU throwing error. Glines then trotted home as Bruder doubled to the gap in left. Kansas tied it with two runs in the second on three Jayhawk hits.
Patrick picked up a nice birthday present in the fourth, as he belted a solo home run to deep center field, giving the Maize and Blue a 3-2 lead. The Jayhawks came back to score three runs in the bottom of the fifth as a double, hit-by-pitch and infield single loaded the bases. The second hit-by-pitch of the inning plated the tying run. Then a fielder's choice and pinch-hit single gave KU a 5-3 lead.
Both teams plated a run in the sixth. Patrick sacrifice fly scored Bruder, who led off the inning with an infield single. Kansas answered with a Connor McKay solo home run to center. Michigan cut the lead to 6-5 in the seventh as Cronenworth singled, went to second on a Glines walk, moved to third on freshman Hector Gutierrez's sacrifice bunt and scored on sophomore Carmen Benedetti's groundout.
Sophomore Brett Adcock was tagged with the loss. He allowed five runs and seven hits in four-plus innings of work. Adcock struck out three and walked a pair. Freshman Bryan Pall pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out a batter, while sophomore Mac Lozer added a strikeout in two-thirds on an inning on the mound.
Michigan and Kansas continue the three-game series Saturday (March 14) at 2 p.m. CDT. The game will be streamed on WatchESPN.
