LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Senior Eric Jacobson broke a 2-all tie with a two-run single in the top of the eighth, lifting the University of Michigan baseball team to a 4-2 win over Kansas Saturday afternoon (March 14) at Hoglund Ballpark.
Michigan trailed the Jayhawks 2-1 heading into the top of the eighth. Junior Cody Bruder reached second on a dropped pop up to open the inning. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Drew Lugbauer and scored as fifth-year senior Kendall Patrick singled through the left side. Kansas reliever Sean Gilbert walked sophomore Johnny Slater to put two runners on. Both Wolverines moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch, and Jacobson brought them in with the single past the Jayhawk infield that was playing in.
The Wolverines used some two-out magic to score a run in the first. Kansas starter Sean Rackoski retired the first two batters, but gave up singles to senior Jackson Glines and sophomore Carmen Benedetti. Bruder then came through with a single to right, scoring Glines for the game's first run. Kansas went up 2-1 in the third on a two-run double to the gap in right by Michael Tinsley.
Freshman Oliver Jaskie earned his first win as a Wolverine, pitching a scoreless seventh frame with a strikeout. Junior Jacob Cronenworth picked up his third save of the year, striking out a batter in the final two innings. Freshman Ryan Nutof struck out five, allowing four hits and two runs with three walks in six innings of work.
At the plate, Bruder had three hits and an RBI, while Glines and Patrick had two hits apiece as the Wolverines had 11 hits on the day.
The series between Michigan and Kansas concludes the three-game set with the rubber game Sunday afternoon (March 15) at noon CDT.
