PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team jumped out to an early lead, but eventually fell to the No. 18 Penn Quakers by a 12-9 count on Saturday (Feb. 17) at Penn's Franklin Field. The Wolverines were led offensively by junior Decker Curran, who collected the second hat-trick of his career.
Michigan (2-1) led, 3-0, after three minutes over the Quakers before Penn (1-0) matched the run to make it 3-all at 7:02 of the first quarter. Freshman Alex Buckanavage's second gave U-M a 4-3 lead before the sides traded goals to finish out the quarter. Following the first stanza, U-M led, 5-4, aided by a 7-of-9 effort at the dot from senior Michael McDonnell and freshman Connor Cronin.
Penn outscored the Wolverines, 3-1, in the second quarter to take a 7-6 lead into halftime, keyed by a pair of scores from Simon Mathias. Michigan's goal in the frame came at the 9:02 mark from freshman Kevin Mack; it was his first collegiate goal.
At the half, U-M owned advantages in shots by a 22-21 margin, ground balls (13-9) and faceoffs (9-of-14).
Following a quick goal from the Quakers on an extra-man chance to start the third quarter, Curran went on a one-man scoring streak with goals at 9:45 and 6:27 of the period, respectively. The Quakers' Kevin McGeary also had a pair, coupled with an early extra-man goal to give Penn a 10-8 lead heading into the fourth.
Trailing, 11-8, with 7:36 to go, Mack added his second goal of the game to give the Wolverines life, and cut the Penn lead to a pair of scores at 11-9. However, it was the last goal the Maize and Blue would muster the rest of the contest.
From there, Penn's Tyler Dunn added his second tally of the contest with 3:26 left in regulation. With just over two minutes left, U-M was unable to convert on an extra-man opportunity in its final offensive chance of the contest, as time ran out on the comeback attempt.
