NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought matchup against the No. 11 Yale Bulldogs by a 15-11 score on Saturday (Feb. 24) at Yale's Reese Stadium. The contest saw U-M lead by as many as three goals and featured five lead changes to go along with a school-record-tying four assists for freshman Kevin Mack.
Michigan (2-2) fell behind 1-0 less than a minute into the contest, but a score from junior Brent Noseworthy on a feed from freshman Kevin Mack on the wing evened the score at 1-1.
With the score knotted at 2-2 with 7:45 to go in the opening quarter, Yale's (1-1) Ben Reeves scored a pair of goals with less than a minute to go in the stanza to give the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead heading into the second.
Following another Yale goal just over a minute into the second quarter, the Wolverines went on a 4-0 run with a pair of goals from Noseworthy and one apiece from Mack and fellow freshman Alex Buckanavage to take a 6-5 lead with 7:03 to go in the second quarter.
Buckanavage tacked on another nearly five minutes later. Senior PJ Bogle followed with a truck stick goal with 33 seconds left to give the Wolverines an 8-6 lead heading into the half.
The pair for Noseworthy in the quarter gave him a first-half hat trick, and the fastest hat trick in term history (22 minutes).
Coming out of the half, the Wolverines added to their lead with a score from Curran on a helper from Mack just over two minutes into the half to extend the lead to 9-6, which turned out to be U-M's largest lead on the afternoon.
The Bulldogs closed the gap with a pair back-to-back scores before Mack put an end to the run at the seven-minute mark with his fourth point of the day. U-M held the 10-8 lead before Yale's Jackson Morrill scored twice within 1:17 seconds to tie the game for the fifth time at 10-10. Will Carbrea added another Bulldog goal with seconds to go in the third as Yale took an 11-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The one-goal deficit proved to be the closest U-M would get the rest of the way, the Bulldogs outdistanced the Wolverines with three straight scores to extend the lead to 14-10 with 3:35 to go.
Noseworthy added U-M's final goal of the day with 2:30 to go on a feed from Mack to run the tally to 14-11, but time ran out on the fourth quarter comeback with Yale adding a late goal to bring the final count to 15-11.
