ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team overcame a pair of three-goal deficits en route to a 14-9 victory over the Air Force Falcons on Friday (March 9) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
Senior midfielder Chase Young had a career-best four points (three goals, one assist) and freshman Kevin Mack had a game-high five points (3G, 2A) to lead the offense.
The Air Force Falcons (1-5) scored three goals in the first quarter, while Michigan (4-2) was held scoreless for the duration of the period.
The Wolverines bounced back in the second period with goals from junior Brent Noseworthy and Mack to cut the Air Force lead to one goal. The Falcons answered with two more in the next four minutes to extend the lead back to three goals. The Wolverines responded with three unanswered goals, two from Young and another from Mack, to knot it up at 5 headed into the half.
Air Force got off to another quick start coming out of the break as it scored a goal in the first two-and-a-half minutes, and added another man-up goal six minutes later. Freshman Alex Buckanavage found the back of the net nearly nine minutes into the third period to end the Falcon run.
Young responded for the Wolverines two minutes later, completing his first career hat trick. Senior Sean McCanna followed with a goal in the last 30 seconds of the period and sent the game to the final quarter tied at 8.
U-M put the screws to Air Force defensively in the fourth, as they killed off two extra-man chances. Michigan earned its first lead of the game when Noseworthy scored his second of the game less than two minutes into the fourth quarter. Junior Decker Curran made it four straight goals for the Wolverines when he added his first goal of the game less than a minute later. Air Force responded with its first and only goal of the period with just under 10 minutes to play in the game.
Michigan was not done scoring, however, and added four more goals in the last five minutes of play, which ended with a stretch during which the Wolverines scored eight of the contest's last nine goals. Mack completed his hat trick while Curran and Buckanavage each scored their second goals of the game.
Sophomore Matt Trowbridge played all 60 minutes in the net for U-M, allowing nine goals while making seven saves.
