PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team saw its six-game win streak halted on the road, falling to No. 18 Rutgers, 3-0, on Friday afternoon (Oct. 25) at the Rutgers Field Hockey Complex.
The Scarlet Knights scored all three of their goals on penalty corners, including an upgraded call in the final minute of the second quarter, at 29:47, that provided them a two-goal halftime cushion. Austyn Cuneo scored that marker off a drag flick at the top of the circle and assisted on the other two for Rutgers, which opened scoring at the 22:13 mark and tacked on its third at 40:48.
Michigan largely controlled play early and late in the contest, outshooting Rutgers, 3-0, in the first quarter and 4-0 in the fourth. The Wolverines pulled sophomore goalkeeper Anna Spieker to start the final quarter in favor of an extra attacker and poured on the pressure but could not convert.
In all, U-M outshot the Scarlet Knights, 10-6, and outcornered them, 10-4. Spieker earned two saves through three quarters of play, while senior Fay Keijer added a defensive save in the second quarter. Rutgers goalkeeper Gianna Glatz earned one stop, and the home team also earned a defensive save on the Wolverines' best chance of the game when senior Meg Dowthwaite got the ball behind the Scarlet Knight defense in the circle, pulled Glatz out and put a shot on goal -- only to have it blocked on the goal line.
The Wolverines (12-4, 5-2 Big Ten) will wrap up the weekend road trip on Sunday (Oct. 27) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where they will face No. 11 Saint Joseph's at noon at Ellen Ryan Field.
