ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite four players scoring double digits, the No. 21-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team fell to Notre Dame, 76-72, on Saturday (Nov. 23) at Crisler Center. Sophomore Naz Hillmon (17 points, 16 rebounds) and senior Kayla Robbins (11 points, 12 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles in the loss.
Junior Hailey Brown had 15 points, while sophomore Amy Dilk once again filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals.
The Wolverines were dominant on the glass, collecting more offensive rebounds (27) than defensive rebounds (26). They outrebounded Notre Dame by 29, but only shot 34 percent from the field and 58 percent from foul line. Notre Dame shot 50 percent from the field and 70 percent from the foul line.
Notre Dame went up, 4-1, early, but a three-pointer by Brown quickly knotted the score. The Wolverines found success inside in the first quarter, however; after freshman Izabel Varejão grabbed an offensive rebound and putback, Hillmon did the same off a missed free throw. A three-pointer by the Fighting Irish tied the game at 12, but Robbins kicked off an 8-1 run with another putback. Freshman Michelle Sidor hit a corner triple at the end of the first quarter, sending U-M into the second quarter ahead 25-19.
A layup from Hillmon and two free throws by Robbins put Michigan up, 33-22, but Notre Dame reeled off a 10-2 run to cut the lead to three before Sidor hit a deep three-pointer from the top of the key. The Fighting Irish got hot in the second quarter, making seven-of-seven field goal attempts at one point. Destinee Walker hit a mid-range jumper at the buzzer, trimming Michigan's lead to just one at 44-43 heading into halftime.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the third quarter, but the visitors went back in front, 47-44, on a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Walker. The Wolverines responded with a 9-0 run, keyed by Brown, who hit back-to-back threes. Robbins made a layup in traffic, drew contact and knocked down the free throw, putting Michigan up, 53-47. The Fighting Irish hung around, but Michigan led by four at the start of the fourth quarter.
Michigan held a 63-60 lead in the early stages of the fourth quarter on a baseline drive layup from Dilk, but Notre Dame rattled off a 7-0 run from there to take the lead for good. Hillmon made two free throws to cut it to 73-70 with a minute left, then forced a shot-clock violation to get the ball back with a chance to tie and 33.5 seconds remaining. Off the inbound play, Sidor had an open look for three, but came up short. The Fighting Irish hit their free throws to seal the win.
The Wolverines will return to the court on Wednesday (Nov. 27), when they face Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on ESPN Plus.
