The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team (1-0) will open up its 2019 home season with a Tuesday (Feb. 19) matchup against the Drexel Dragons at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. Faceoff is slated for 3 p.m., and the contest will be streamed via MGoBlue.com.
Wolverine Bites
• Senior Brent Noseworthy enters the week one point short of 100 for his career (86 goals, 13 assists). He is seeking to become the third Wolverine in program history to reach the 100-point plateau. He trails Ian King (144) and Kyle Jackson (113) for the most points in program history, and his 86 goals rank third, trailing King's program-best mark of 94 and Jackson's 88. Noseworthy also has scored at least one point in 29 straight games, the eighth-longest streak in the NCAA.
• In the most recent USILA Coaches Poll, U-M is receiving votes for the second straight week with the 24th-most points. Additionally, U-M is ranked No. 19 in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.
• Michigan has won its last five home openers dating back to the 2014 season.
• In the season-opening win over Cleveland State (Feb. 9), Michigan jumped out to a 7-0 lead, holding CSU scoreless for the first 25:04 of the contest, and was able to hang on for a 10-8 win. A U-M goalless span of nearly 15 minutes saw CSU cut the advantage to one goal before the Wolverines distanced themselves. Sophomore Alex Buckanavage led the offensive effort with three goals and two assists for five points.
• Junior longpole JM Priddy returned to the starting lineup on close defense in the season opener and collected one ground ball and caused a turnover. The contest was his first action for the Wolverines since March 11, 2017. He missed half of his freshman season and all of his sophomore season due to injury.
• Four student-athletes -- graduate student Peter Hollen, junior Austin Robinson and freshmen Andrew Darby and Zach Johnson -- all made their U-M debuts against the Vikings. Much-heralded freshman Bryce Clay missed the matchup due to injury but is expected to make his U-M debut at some point in the week.
• U-M shot 22 percent (10-of-45) in the victory over CSU, its lowest shooting percentage in a win during head coach Kevin Conry's tenure.
• Senior midfielder Brandon Shima made his first start for U-M since April 10, 2016 as a first-line midfielder. A two-time Scout Team MVP during his time at Michigan, Shima looks to feature more prominently in assistant coach Justin Turri's offense.
Opponent Preview
Drexel -- The Dragons (0-1) are coming off a narrow 15-14 overtime defeat in their season opener on Saturday (Feb. 16) against No. 16 High Point. Marshal King led the offensive effort with six points (2g, 4a), while FOGO Jimmeh Koita went 21-of-32 at the dot to go along with 12 ground balls. The Dragon offense was impressive with 11 goals in the first half, including seven in the first quarter of action.
Michigan is 0-1 all-time against Drexel, falling by a 9-7 score on March 21, 2015 inside Michigan Stadium. Drexel head coach Brian Voelker recruited U-M head coach Kevin Conry at Johns Hopkins. Current U-M assistant Jim Rogalski was an assistant coach at Drexel from 2002-05.
