ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team opened up its home schedule with a 17-16 double-overtime loss at the hands of Drexel on Tuesday (Feb. 19) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
Michigan (1-1) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and kept Drexel scoreless for the majority of the first quarter. The Dragons didn't get on the scoreboard until the 3:44 mark.
Senior Brent Noseworthy entered the game sitting at 99 career points, and he wasted little time reaching the 100-point plateau, scoring two goals within the first two minutes of the game to become just the third Wolverine to surpass 100 career points.
Sophomores Kevin Mack and Alex Buckanavage added to Michigan's lead, each scoring goals before Drexel was able to get on the board. As time expired in the first quarter, Noseworthy scored his third goal of the day, giving Michigan a 5-1 lead heading into the second quarter.
Powered by four unanswered goals in the second quarter, Drexel cut Michigan's lead to 9-6 as the teams headed into halftime.
Michigan and Drexel scored three goals each in the third quarter, with Michigan goals coming from junior Avery Myers, Mack and freshman Bryce Clay.
The Dragons came storming back in the fourth quarter, scoring seven goals and outshooting the Wolverines, 14-5. With 1:36 remaining in fourth, Myers scored his fourth goal of the game, putting the Maize and Blue ahead, 16-14.
In the last minute of regulation, Drexel capitalized on scoring opportunities from Matthew Varian and Reid Bowering which sent the game to overtime.
The first overtime period was a defensive battle, with both teams going scoreless on a combined two shots. After another 2:49 of scoreless play, Drexel's Cam Harris scored the unassisted game-winner.
Buckanavage (four goals, three assists) and Mack (three goals, four assists) led U-M with seven points each, while Myers added six points (four goals, two assists). The goal and point totals were both career highs for Myers.
Freshman Zach Johnson had a game-high seven ground balls, while senior longpole Nick DeCaprio had four caused turnovers and a trio of ground balls. Noseworthy was also 3-of-4 at the dot with three ground balls.
For Drexel, Bowering ended his day with seven goals on nine shots.
U-M will travel to Jacksonville, Florida, to take on the Dolphins in the Moe's Southwest Lacrosse Classic on Saturday (Feb. 23). The game is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and will be broadcast live via CBS College Sports.
