LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning proved the difference Sunday (March 10) as Oklahoma State logged a 3-2 win over the No. 16-ranked University of Michigan baseball team in the finale of the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic played at Dodger Stadium.
Michigan freshman closer Willie Weiss loaded the bases on a walk and two singles before walking home the eventual game-winning run in the top of the 10th inning. Redshirt freshman Isaiah Paige entered the game and shut down the Cowboys, but Michigan could not muster any offense in the bottom of the frame.
Michigan had done its part to come from behind in a defensive struggle when sophomore Jordan Nwogu unloaded a two-out solo home run to center field.
Sunday's result dropped Michigan's record to 9-4, but the setback came despite another dominant pitching effort from a Wolverine starter. This time it was sophomore right-hander Jeff Criswell, who spun a career-high 12 strikeouts over six innings of work. He allowed two runs on four hits with two walks in a start during which he struck out the side in three innings.
While Criswell struck out five of the first six batters of the game, Trevor Boone jumped on a first-pitch fastball in the third and sent a homer to the left-field corner for a 1-0 OSU lead.
Michigan threatened in the fifth inning as junior Jordan Brewer led off with a single, stole second base and was joined on the bases by sophomore Jesse Franklin, who drew a full-count walk. The threat came to an abrupt end after a fly out and double-play grounder.
OSU extended its lead to 2-0 in the sixth with one out as a walk was followed by a pair of singles. Oklahoma State advanced runners into scoring position, but Criswell limited the damage by striking out the next two batters on fastballs.
Junior Dominic Clementi helped the bats get going in the bottom of the sixth with a one-out opposite-field triple that was followed with a sharp single up the middle from Nwogu. OSU went to the bullpen and Parker Scott got out of the inning with a fly ball before Nowgu was caught stealing to end the inning.
Junior righty Jack Weisenburger started the seventh inning in relief, but walked the first two batters he faced. Head coach Erik Bakich then summoned redshirt junior lefty Benjamin Keizer, who induced three groundouts to end the threat. All told, Keizer threw three hitless innings with three strikeouts.
In the bottom of the seventh, redshirt senior Miles Lewis singled to lead off and Franklin doubled to left-center with one out, forcing OSU back to the bullpen and Logan Gragg responded by getting out of the inning. He cruised through the first two batters he faced before Nwogu stunned the Cowboys with a long home run to straight-away center field to tie the game at 2. Â
Michigan will return to action on Friday (March 15) at 4 p.m., when it opens its 2019 home schedule against Manhattan in the first of a four-game series against the Jaspers at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. Fans under the age of 18 will be admitted free and 2019 season posters will be given away. [ Tickets | Promotions ]
