
Wolverines to End Four-Game Road Stretch at Marquette

The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team will finish off a four-game road swing, traveling to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for a Saturday (March 16) matchup with Marquette at noon CDT.
Wolverine Bites
• A trio of Wolverine seniors, Nick DeCaprio, Brent Noseworthy and Decker Curran, were selected in the 2019 Major League Lacrosse Draft on Saturday (March 9). Both DeCaprio (21st overall) and Noseworthy (30th overall) were selected by the Boston Cannons, with DeCaprio's selction representing the highest-ever for a Wolverine, as Chase Young was drafted 35th last year. Curran rounded out the U-M selections, going 56th overall to the New York Lizards. U-M's three selections tie for the second-most in the entire draft.
• Against No. 4 Yale last Sunday (March 10), graduate student goalie Tommy Heidt made 19 saves in the first half and four in the second for 23 stops, the second-most in a game in U-M program history and fourth-most in the NCAA this season. Heidt ranks No. 10 nationally in saves per game with 13.60 and has double-digit saves in each of the last three games.
• Sophomore attackman Alex Buckanavage (12 goals, nine assists), and classmate Kevin Mack (11G, 10A) are tied for the team lead in points, ranking 38th nationally with 4.20 points/game. Buckanavage also ranks No. 17 in the country in shooting percentage, scoring his 12 goals on 24 shots. Mack has 24 assists in 19 contests in his U-M career, and has a point in 18 straight games. Per Lacrosse Reference, Mack (10.5 percent) and Buckanavage (9.7 percent) are U-M's two highest-usage players.
• Senior Brent Noseworthy has scored at least one point in 33 straight games, the ninth-longest streak in the country. He also is six goals away from becoming the first Wolverine in program history to hit the 100-goal mark in a career. Last season against the Golden Eagles, Noseworthy had four goals on six shots.
• As a whole, U-M's offense boasts five players in double-digit points on the campaign and ranks No. 13 in the country in points per game with 21, and is No. 9 in assists per game (8.20).
• Michigan is one of three teams that have a 3-0 record in true road games this season, along with No. 5 Duke and No. 13 High Point.
• The U-M defense ranks No. 16 in the country in caused turnovers with 10.00/game. Led by seniors DeCaprio (nine) and Michael Borda (seven), fellow senior shortstick MJ Melillo boasts six caused turnovers. DeCaprio ranks second in school history in the category with 48, trailing Chase Brown (2013-16) with 66.
• U-M has led after the first quarter in four of its five games this season, and has outscored its opponents by an 18-8 margin in the opening quarter.
Opponent Preview
Marquette
The Golden Eagles carry a 3-3 mark into Saturday's tilt, most recently defeating Robert Morris 17-15 on Tuesday (March 12). Having played one of the weaker schedules in the country (54th), Marquette boasts wins over Bellarmine (15-9) and Jacksonville (14-12), as well as its victory over RMU, and has lost to a common U-M opponent in Cleveland State (7-5).
Offensively, MU ranks No. 24 in the country with 12.00 goals per game, and 45th in team defense (11.83 goals/game). The squad also takes care of the ball, ranking No. 7 in the country in turnovers at 14.67/game. With five scorers in double-digit points, Tanner Thomson (11G, 5A), and John Wagner (7G, 9A), lead the team in points with 16, while Peter Henkhaus boasts double-digit goals (10).
Noah Richard, most recently selected 25th overall by the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the last Saturday's MLL draft, leads the defensive unit with 22 ground balls and seven caused turnovers. Nick Grill boasts 10 caused turnovers (1.67/game), while FOGO Jared Hershman is winning 47 percent of his draws at the dot. Three goaltenders have started games, with Chris Rolfing starting the last two contests.
One of the handful of teams in located in the Midwest region, U-M and Marquette met last season in the regular season for the first time in program history almost a year to the day (March 17, 2018) of Saturday's game, with the Wolverines coming away with a 12-7 victory.
