MAINVILLE, Ohio -- Senior Elodie Van Dievoet's 68 (-4) guided the University of Michigan women's golf team in Sunday's (April 21) final-round shootout at the Big Ten Championships to help the Wolverines finish seventh after closing with a 285 (-3) Â total to give the Wolverines a 583 event total.
"We had a really solid team round today," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "With even par rounds from Sophia (Trombetta) and Ashley (Lau) and a great closing round from Elodie (Van Dievoet), it was nice to finish under par for the season."
After heading to the TPC River's Bend for the third straight year at the conference tournament, the Maize and Blue posted a 298 in the rainy and chilly opening round on Friday. Sitting in the sixth position, overnight rains and expected inclement weather expected throughout the day forced the cancelation of Saturday's (April 20) second round.
With 34 individual rounds of par or better in the 84-player field along with nine of 14 teams closing in par or better, the final round became a shootout for the conference title as it was reduced to 36 holes for the first time in the history of the event.
In her final collegiate round, Van Dievoet used five birdies to lead U-M with a 68 (-4). Adding in even par 72s from freshmen Ashley Lau and Sophia Trombetta, the Wolverines posted a 285 (-3) -- the second sub-par team tally of the season -- to finish with a 583 total. Despite the total, the Maize and Blue dropped one position to finish seventh.
"Elodie sure went out with a bang, and we are very proud of all she's done for Michigan and our team through the years," said Dowling. "She has scorched the record books for Michigan women's golf, and we now have a new standard to chase."
With the second lowest single-round tally in U-M history (68, -4), Van Dievoet tied for fifth at 142 (-2) posting the sixth top-five individual finish at the conference tournament and the second of her career. She won U-M's first conference title at the 2017 Big Ten Championships.
With rounds of 73 and 72, Lau closed her first conference tournament tying for 11th at 145 (+1). Junior Alisa Snyder used a 148 (75-73) tally to help the Wolverines put three among the top 25 as she tied for 24th. After an opening 77 in her first Big Tens, Trombetta rallied with a 72 in the final round to give her a 149 total, tying for 33rd.
Despite the team's season being complete, the Wolverines have an opportunity for Lau to be selectrd for an NCAA regional. The selections will be broadcast live on the Golf Channel on Wednesday, April 24 at 5:30 p.m. The four regional sites will begin play on Monday through Wednesday, May 6-8.
"Lau played solid all season, and she has an incredibly bright future," added Dowling. "A sign of her great demeanor and great ball striking is her consistent scoring all year long. The difference between her high and low rounds are pretty impressive and we are so excited to help her continue improving. We will find out next week if she will qualify for NCAA's as an individual, and hope she does. Ashley deserves it."
