ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In a meeting between the top two teams in the Big Ten Conference standings, the University of Michigan baseball team fell behind early and could not change the momentum in a 10-4 loss to Indiana on Friday night (May 10) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (36-12, 14-4 Big Ten) saw its nation-leading 13-game win streak come to an end and Indiana (32-17, 13-6 Big Ten) moved within 1.5 games of the first-place Wolverines. Â
Indiana scratched for a pair of first-inning runs behind a one-out walk and a two-out double followed immediately by an RBI single.
Indiana broke the game open in the fourth inning on the strength of three doubles, an infield single and two RBI groundouts to claim a 6-0 lead. The Hoosiers extended their lead to 7-0 in the fifth inning on a leadoff single and a double to the wall in center. By the time the inning was over, Indiana had already managed 10 hits with four doubles against U-M starter Karl Kauffmann (8-4).
Michigan got going with two outs in the bottom of the fifth as junior right fielder Jordan Brewer sent an RBI single up the middle before senior first baseman Jimmy Kerr plated two runs with a line-drive single to right field to make it a 7-3 game.
The momentum was short-lived as two critical errors in the top of the sixth inning gave all three runs back to Indiana for a 10-3 lead. Michigan did scratch for a run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI groundout from sophomore designated hitter Jordan Nwogu.
Sophomore catcher Joe Donovan and sophomore shortstop Jack Blomgren paced the Wolverines' offense with two hits apiece.
The Wolverines and Hoosiers will continue their three-game series on Saturday (May 11) at 2 p.m. from the Wilpon Complex. Â
