ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team used a suffocating effort, scored early and allowed just one total shot to secure a decisive 3-0 win against No. 10 Wake Forest and earn an ACC/Big Ten Challenge split on rainy Sunday afternoon (Sept. 1) at Phyllis Ocker Field.
The Wolverines took advantage of penalty-corner opportunities to build their lead through the opening half, as senior Meg Dowthwaite converted with nearly-identical goals early in the first and second quarters -- at 5:59 and 16:11, respectively. Both of Dowthwaite's direct shots deflected off the stick of the Wake Forest flyer, who inadvertently ramped the ball high over the Demon Deacon goalkeeper. Sophomore Kathryn Peterson assisted on both goals with the insert, while senior Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort and freshman Sarah Pyrtek stopped on the first and second markers, respectively. Dowthwaite, U-M's leading scorer in 2017, already has three goals this season.
Peterson, with a hand in all three Michigan goals, added an insurance marker at the 40:02 mark in the third quarter, as she dribbled the ball into the circle from the right before she sent a reverse chip high on goal. The ball hit Wake Forest goalkeeper Isla Bint and deflected high and over her head. Peterson has one goal and three assists through two games.
Michigan outshot the Demon Deacons, 6-1, and outcornered them, 4-0. Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned one save, kicking away a close-range shot in the fourth quarter, to preserve the shutout while Bint stopped two of five Wolverine shots on goals.
The Wolverines (1-1) will head west for a pair of non-conference slates in the Golden State next weekend. U-M will face Stanford at 7 p.m. PDT on Friday (Sept. 6) at Varsity Field Hockey Turf in Palo Alto, California, before wrapping the road trip at noon PDT on Sunday (Sept. 8) against California at the Golden Bears' Underhill Field in Berkeley.
