IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 10 Iowa in its road finale Sunday afternoon (Oct. 26) at Grant Field.
Iowa broke a scoreless tie early in the third quarter with a penalty-corner goal, then added an open-net marker in the final minute to seal the win. The first goal came less than four minutes into the second half, at 33:15, when the nation's leading scorer, Dionne van Aalsum, fired a direct shot from the top of the arc to give the Hawkeyes a 1-0 lead.
Michigan generated sustained pressure throughout the second quarter but struggled to capitalize inside the circle. The Wolverines earned a quality chance late in the third on a penalty corner, but freshman Maxine Rogge's initial shot was blocked and fifth-year senior Emmy Tran sent the rebound just wide from the left post.
Iowa continued to press in the third, but graduate student goalkeeper Caylie McMahon came up with several key saves, challenging a shot near the stroke mark and stopping another attempt off an intercepted pass late in the frame. McMahon made another crucial stop early in the fourth quarter to keep Michigan within reach.
Graduate student Abby Tamer narrowly missed on a reverse shot from the top of the arc with about four minutes remaining. Michigan then pulled McMahon for an extra attacker and successfully defended a penalty corner without a goalkeeper before earning one of its own, but Rogge's shot was turned aside.
Iowa iced the game with another goal at 59:14, taking a free hit near the Michigan 25 and feeding the ball into the circle, where it was tipped into the open cage by a diving stick in front.
Iowa outshot Michigan 10-7, while the Wolverines held a slight 4-3 edge in penalty corners. Junior/sophomore Hala Silverstein and McMahon combined for six saves, including four from McMahon in the second half. Iowa goalkeeper Mia Magnotta finished with two stops.
The Wolverines (8-6, 3-4 Big Ten) will honor their four-member senior class when they host Indiana for their regular-season finale at 5 p.m. next Friday (Oct. 31) at Phyllis Ocker Field. Admission is free, and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
