Big Ten Freshman of the Week -- Freshman Josh Zawada of the University of Michigan men's lacrosse team has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after collecting a game-high five points playing in his first game as a Wolverine. He had two goals, one in each half, and three assists and also contributed four ground ball pickups at his attack position. The Raleigh, North Carolina, native is the first Wolverine to take home the accolade since Bryce Clay on March 15 of last season. » Big Ten Release
Big Ten Players to Watch (Jan. 27)
Big Ten Players to Watch -- Junior Alex Buckanavage and sophomores Andrew Darby and Bryce Clay were named Players to Watch by the Big Ten Conference.
Buckanavage was named second-team All-Big Ten a season ago, leading the team in both goals (25) and assists (23). His point total of 48 tied the U-M single-season record. He enters his junior campaign tied for fifth in program history with 79 points (44g., 35a.).
Darby, the lone returning starter on the close defense, will be looked upon as U-M's main cover longpole. He had 29 ground ball pickups to go along with 13 caused turnovers as a true freshman.
Clay is coming off a freshman campaign where he scored 22 goals and registered 28 points, ranking No. 18 in the country in points for a freshman. Clay's hustle was on full display, compiling 23 ground balls and caused six turnovers, and displays uncanny leadership skills for an underclassman.
In the Big Ten Preseason Poll, U-M was picked to finish sixth. Penn State was the unanimous choice for the top spot, followed by Maryland, Johns Hopkins, Ohio State and Rutgers. » Big Ten Release
