Wolverine Bites
• U-M head coach Jan Dowling is not backing down from going head-to-head with the best programs in the nation. During the four fall events, U-M faced 10 top-25 teams at the Windy City Collegiate Championships followed by the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational, with an 18-team field that featured 13 top-50 teams. The Maize and Blue then headed to the Landfall Tradition which included 18 top-100 teams -- 13 ranked among the top 50. Now, the Wolverines open the spring season at the IJGA Collegiate Invitational which has 12 of 14 teams among to top 50. Michigan is ranked No. 43 by Golfweek and No. 49 by the Golfstat rankings.
• It has been quite the start for freshman Hailey Borja. After posting a 217 (+1) total in her collegiate debut at the Glass City Invitational, she repeated the effort with a 217 (+1) total to lead the Wolverines at the Windy City Collegiate Championship. In the fall, she posted seven of 12 rounds at par or better, with a career-low 71 (-1) in her first collegiate round at Glass City. Overall, she is averaging 219.50 per 54-hole event and leads U-M with a 73.17 per round average.
• Borja's fourth-place tie at the Glass City Invitational was the best opening tournament finish for a U-M freshman since 1995, when Sharon Park, finished fifth in her collegiate debut at the Spartan Invitational (Sept. 16-17), exactly 24 years prior to Borja's performance.
• Like last season, Ashley Lau has quietly gone about her work on the golf course. She is averaging 74.67 per round as she has produced 11 of her 12 fall rounds at 76 or lower. She posted two 226, 54-hole tallies to start the fall and closed with back-to-back tallies of 222.
• In her first career start, freshman Anika Dy fired an opening career-low 70 (-2) at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational. Using that momentum, she led the Wolverines for the first time in her career as she tied for 27th with a 217 (+1) tally. She finished the fall starting two of four events averaging 74.08 strokes per round.
• Freshman Mikaela Schulz was the Big Ten Golfer of the Week after she won the Shirley Spork EMU Invitational with a 212 (-4) tally in her collegiate debut. Playing as an individual, Schulz bogeyed her first career hole before rattling off seven birdies for a first-round 68 (-4), tying the 10th-lowest round in U-M history. She followed with back-to-back scores of 72 to claim the title over teammate Ashley Kim (214, -2). She finished the fall playing in two events and averaging 73.50 per round.
• Adding in the individual win for Schulz at the Shirley Spork EMU Invitational, Michigan was led by a freshman in three of the five fall events. The freshman class makes up the top two scoring leaders and has three among the top five -- Borja (73.17; four events), Schulz (73.50; two events) and Dy (74.08; four events).
• Seven of the nine Wolverines this season have recorded a sub-par round tally. Schulz owns the team's season low with a 68 (-4) in her first collegiate round at the Shirley Spork EMU Invitational. Overall,
