Wolverines Take Down St. John's Behind Mack's Hat Trick

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back, defeating St. John's, 16-11, on Saturday (Feb. 29) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. U-M was led by a four-goal effort from sophomore Bryce Clay and a six-point output (three goals, three assists) from freshman Josh Zawada.
The Wolverines (3-2) began the game on a 3-0 run and led, 5-2, after the first quarter, with two scores coming from Clay over that span. The second stanza was much of the same, as the Maize and Blue used a pair of markers from senior Rocco Sutherland to outpace the Red Storm, 6-2, in the second quarter and carry an 11-4 lead into the half.
At the intermission, U-M held a 29-15 advantage on shots, and a 19-16 lead in ground balls.
Coming out of the half, U-M ran the advantage to 14-6 with scores coming from Clay (13:20), Sutherland (12:09) and Mack (7:51). SJU (2-3) outscored U-M, 4-1, over the last 7:51 of the third to bring the score to 15-10 after three quarters of action.
In the fourth, Zawada added his third of the contest at 8:35 to run the score to 16-10 before SJU's Matt Oehl cut it to 16-11 at 3:12 with the game's final goal.
The St. John's attack unit scored eight of its 11 goals, while FOGO Jonathan Dugenio went 17-of-30 with 12 ground balls.
Junior Kevin Mack had a hat-trick to extend his point streak to 31 games, while Clay marked his third hat trick of the season. Zawada's six points gave him multiple points in all five games of his Wolverine career. Sutherland's trio earned him the second hat-trick of his career and the first since the 2017 campaign. Sophomore defensive midfielder Andrew Russell had a team-high five ground balls.

Next up, U-M will embark on its annual spring-break trip, traveling to Costa Mesa, California, to take on the Yale Bulldogs next Saturday (March 7) in the Pacific Coast Shootout. The matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST at Orange Coast College.
